Walter E. Hess, II

Walter E. Hess, II

Walter E. Hess, II passed away on Saturday, December 24, 2011 at his home in Savannah, GA after a long illness. He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Helen Hess, his 3 daughters, Julie Farnham Stuart of Colorado Springs, CO, Laura Ubben Jeff of San Francisco, CA, Jennifer Hess of New York, NY and 6 grandchildren Benjamin, Nathaniel, Charlotte, Elizabeth, Josephine, and Theo. Born in Harrisburg, PA he was the son of Walter E. Hess and Katherine Hess. He attended the St. Alban's School in Washington, DC where he sang in the National Cathedral Choir. He was a graduate of Duke University in Durham, NC where he met and fell in love with Helen. Two of his daughters, Julie and Laura also met and married their spouses at Duke. His first job was with the Marriott Corporation in Bethesda, MD. Wally learned the value of great customer service at Marriott, which served him well in a hugely successful career in sales. He was the New York City territory representative in commemorative award sales for Balfour and the Robbins Company for 20 years, retiring in 2002. His clients included, the New York Yankees, Mets, Jets and Giants, the NBA, AT&T, Prudential and the US Olympic Committee, among others. Wally wore a World Series ring and, at 6 foot 4 inches tall, could easily be mistaken for a professional ballplayer. He loved the outdoors, rising early to spend the whole day on his well manicured property in Darien, CT. When not pruning, he was outside playing tennis, golf or skiing on Bromley Mountain in Vermont. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
A Memorial Service is planned for 11:00 a.m., January 14, 2012 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church on Skidaway Island.
