Dennis Eugene Mataxas

Dennis Eugene Mataxas, native Savannahian, died Monday, January 2, 2012 at Hospice of Savannah. He was the son of the late James Mataxas, Sr & Louise Cole Mataxas. He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years Mimi Mataxas.
He is survived by his daughter Evelyn Louise Kennedy Jack and son William W. Mataxas Mary Jane. His brother James Mataxas Anna & sister Patti Pine Glen. He & Mimi had 6 grandchildren, Dee Kennedy Gagel George, Kevin Mataxas Melanie, Timothy Cope Sheryl, Kristi Mataxas Arnsdorff Richard, Wesley Kennedy and Kim Kennedy Brannen Aulbert. Dennis was great grandfather to 21, ages 23 years to -4 months. He is also survived by numerous nieces & nephews.
Dennis was a WWII veteran. He served in combat from landing at Normandy to the final campaign of the Rhineland. He held 5 battle stars for his service. Following his discharge he remained in service to his country as a civilian employee of the Department of the Army until his return to Savannah with his wife & daughter. He ended his career with DOA when he retired from civil service as Director of Supply, 3rd Army Hunter HAAF/Fort Stewart, Ga/Fort Rucker, Ala in 1975.
He enjoyed his retired life traveling with his wife & grandchildren. He loved the coast & often fished & boated. Dennis loved sports especially football, local, college & professional. Playing cards was also a great pastime & he did this until shortly before his death. He was a member of AHEPA at St. Paul's as well as a founding member of The Old-timers Softball League. Except for his time in service he lived his entire life in Savannah. He remained a part of the same circle of friends from childhood until his death but nothing was dearer to him than his family.
Dennis was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church. His service of Christian burial will be held at St. Paul's at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, January 5, 2012. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel with a Trisagion Service at 7:00 p.m. Interment will be at Bonaventure Cemetery with military tribute.
The family wishes to have any remembrances sent to Hospice of Savannah or the charity of their choice.
