Celebrating the life of
May Lewis Poetter
July 30, 1917 - January 11, 2012
May Lewis Poetter, Savannah College of Art and Design SCAD cofounder and lifelong educator, passed away at her home in Savannah on January 11, 2012, at the age of 94.
The daughter of the late Frank Lewis and May Olive Keys Lewis, May Lewis Poetter was born on July 30, 1917 in Collins, Mississippi. May was a devoted wife to her late husband Paul, a mother to two daughters, Paula and Pam, a beloved grandmother to seven grandchildren, a cherished friend, and a dedicated member of the Skidaway Island United Methodist Church. Perhaps her most indelible role was set into motion on September 29, 1978: the day she cofounded SCAD. Over the past three decades, May was a mentor and surrogate mother for countless SCAD students. She was one of SCAD's first and most enduring champions, and her absence will be deeply felt throughout the university.
After graduating with a bachelor's degree in elementary education from University of Southern Mississippi, May earned a master's degree in education from Emory University, and, then, entered the Atlanta Public School System as an elementary school teacher. She later coordinated the Language Arts program in 23 elementary schools, three middle schools and six high schools within the Atlanta area. May also wrote two language arts textbooks for the Houghton Mifflin Company, contributing key curriculum to classrooms across the nation.
When she relocated to Savannah in 1977 to help launch a new art and design college with her daughter Paula, May's natural gifts – compassion and resourcefulness, among many others – made her a versatile member of the SCAD family. She served as SCAD's first admission representative, and, later, the university's first vice president for admission. For many years, hers was the first voice that welcomed prospective students over the phone or passing through the front doors of her namesake building, Poetter Hall.
May's leadership and insight guided SCAD through years of tremendous growth. She watched with pride as the small Southern school she had always believed in became the most comprehensive nonprofit and accredited art and design university in the world, with 11, 063 students, more than 700 faculty, and campuses in Savannah, Atlanta, Lacoste, and Hong Kong, as well as online through SCAD eLearning.
As a SCAD Trustee since 1996, May brought her signature warmth and discerning wisdom to every resolution, project, and proposition. The best interest of SCAD students was at the forefront of her mind, and she mentored many students during and beyond their SCAD years.
Everyone who knew May, knew of her unyielding faith. While in Atlanta, she was a devoted member of West End Baptist Church and Beecher Hills Baptist Church, where she taught many bible study groups and Sunday School Classes. In Savannah, May was an active member of Bull Street Baptist Church, and ministered to many SCAD students through the Christian Student Fellowship. May also participated in the "Holy Porch", a ladies' Monday morning bible study held at the home of her best friend, the late Georgia Thompson.
Throughout her life, May was highly regarded for her charitable giving and tireless leadership in the Savannah and Atlanta communities. She maintained active memberships in many clubs and organizations, including Daughters of the American Revolution, Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims, National Order of Colonial Dames, The 100 Club, International Chapter of the PEO Sisterhood, Kappa Delta Epsilon, the Shadrack Rodgers Chapter, and the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. For her contributions to SCAD, Savannah, and the arts, she was awarded an honorary doctorate by SCAD and inducted into the University of Southern Mississippi Alumni Hall of Fame.
In 1999, SCAD established the May and Paul Poetter scholarship to honor May and her late husband. This scholarship has enabled many young people around the world to attend SCAD and gain the ultimate gift: a career and a life in art.
May is survived by her daughter Paula Wallace, of Savannah, Ga. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren, Marisa Rowan, of Atlanta, Ga; John Paul Rowan, of Hong Kong; Madison and Trace Wallace, of Savannah, Ga; Kevin Stogner, of Washington, D.C.; Kimberly Stogner Shreve, of Savannah, Ga.; and Adam Afifi, of Savannah, Ga.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm on Sunday, January 15, 2012 at Skidaway Island United Methodist Church, 54 Diamond Causeway. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the SCAD May and Paul Poetter Scholarship Fund, at P.O. Box 3146, Savannah, GA 31402.

I am sad to hear of Mrs. Poetter's passing. I have many fond memories of our travels in the Off Campus Program to England with her husband Paul. She was always inquisitive, well-informed and full of energy. I remember after one full day of tramping around an expansive Treasure House estate in York, she enthusiastically endorsed the request by some of the SCAD students to return again the next day! Over the years, through her positive guidance as Director of Admissions, she provided my classes with exceptional students. On a more personal note, Mrs. Poetter never failed to ask after my children when I would see her at SCAD. Her vision and perseverance lifted the lives of so many. My deepest sympathy. Judith Allen

Aunt Willie May was a great, positive influence in my life during a very difficult time. I'm thankful for the fond memories I have of her at SCAD and at family get togethers in Mississippi. I pray GOD's blessing and comfort for her loved ones who remain to carry on without her.
- Susan Coulter-Wolf, Moss Point, MS
Paula: I extend my deepest sympathy to you and your family on the loss of your lovely Mother. Mrs. Poetter was the most brilliant educator I have ever known and a great lady in every sense of the word. She always remained calm and dignified, even in difficult times, but I think she will be remembered most for her extraordinary ability to interact with and inspire her young students to heights they might never have reached without her guidance and direction. She will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
- Norman Blackwell, Clyo, GA
President Wallace, Please accept my sincerest condolences. My prayers will be with you and your family.
- Susan Elliott, Savannah, GA
My sincere condolences to May Poetter's family. I knew Dr. Poetter only through my exposure to SCAD. I am very grateful to her for the wonderful institution that she helped build. SCAD is a great contribution to the creative world, and on a smaller scale, a gift to those, like myself, who visit Savannah and enjoy the beauty of the city that SCAD's presence helps create.

Mrs. Poetter was a great southern lady. She embraced all who ventured into the SCAD family with her special grace. I enjoyed every encounter I ever had with her and Mr. Poetter. We had the priviledge to travel together many times. These experiences included lively discussions regarding everything under the sun. Their gift of helping you to see the greatness that is possible was always inspiring. I loved how they would challenge you to be a better person in every way. Both Mr. and Mrs. Poetter will always hold a special place in our lives and we will miss them both. My memories of them always make me smile. It is another gift they left us with. Our sincere condolences to your family. We are thinking of you. Fondly, Vicki Saulnier

I am writing this note as I wait for a flight to take my home to celebrate the life of one of the greatest individuals I have ever known. May Poetter or as Kimberly so rightly calls her Momay was a guiding light for everyone who was fortunate enough to have known her. If you knew her only for a passing moment she had the ability to make you feel like family. Momay loved her work, but if you asked my grandmother what her greatest accomplishment was she would no doubt have said it was her two daughters, Paula and Pam. As soon as either of them walked into the room you could see my grandmother light up. She would tell us all stories about Pam singing and Paula playing the piano. Truly her love and pride in their accomplishments and more importantly in the people they grew into was unrivalled. Her lessons on the need for community, to keep an open mind and to find the best in everyone will live on in each of us. Thank you for your kind support during this difficult time.
- John Paul Rowan, Hong Kong,
I am grateful I got to know Mrs. Poetter even a little. She was a mysterious bundle of energy, even as she advanced in age. How did she manage to do so much?

Paula, so sorry to hear of your loss. I remember your mother from years ago when I tutored you in math and you tried to teach me piano. I am just amazed at the wonderful legacy she leaves behind with the work at SCAD. It has such an incredible reputation. I know the Lord will be your comfort in the days to come. He is so faithful. Blessings, Marsha

I grew up going to my grandparents’ house after church on Sundays. Mrs. Poetter, “Momay” to us, would make a feast – pot roast with carrots and potatoes, cornbread, fried okra and iced tea. We held hands as Papa blessed the meal, and then Momay encouraged us to pile our plates high. I obeyed with enthusiasm, racing to the kids’ table to dig in. I never understood how Momay could wait until everyone else was eating to finally serve herself. Looking back, I have come to realize – the joy of it for her was in seeing us happy. As the years passed and we grandchildren went off to college, Momay always wanted us to make time to visit her. She would ask about our interests and share her wisdom. I never wondered if being a woman would limit my success; I could see plainly that it hadn’t limited her. It is so difficult to let her go, after 28 years of that priceless counsel. But when I think of all the lives she has touched, all the people who have loved her, I know hers was a life well lived.
- Kimberly Shreve, Savannah, GA
Mrs. Poetter holds such a special place in my heart. After drill team practice one day, my friend, Pam Poetter, said she and her mom would give me a ride home. It is a trip I will never forget! As Pam shared the events of the day with her mom, they began to talk about the Lord. I did not know very much about religion so I thought it very strange as they talked about this 'Jesus' as if they knew Him personally. This ride home left a definite indention in my memory and was a foundation that later led me to know Christ as my personal Savior, also. God bless you, Mrs. Poetter! I'll see you again one day!
