Celebrating the life of
June Hargrave Sasser
August 23, 1922 - January 17, 2012
WILMINGTON ISLAND - June Hargrave Sasser, 89, died peacefully Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at her home on Wilmington Island completely surrounded by her children, grandchildren, beloved friends and her pups.
Mrs. Sasser was born on August 23, 1922 in Dublin, TX, and was the daughter of the late John and Hazel Gentry Hargrave. She met the "love of her life" during WWII and married her late husband, Willie O'Conner Sasser. Together they operated several businesses under Sasser Family Enterprises for many years.
Her love of life was always present. She had a true love for animals and was a founding member of the wildlife sanctuary on Wilmington Island. She was also a former member of the Savannah Golf Club and the Wilmington Island Golf Club.
She had a true passion for the simpler things in life. Swimming in the river, fishing trips, beautiful dances, golfing and "just" being a wife and mother.
She was a longtime member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer and was instrumental in the relocation and construction of the Church at its current location. She had recently become a member of Chapel by the Sea on Tybee Island.
June Sasser's life was a road map of extra ordinary deep devotion, love and passion for her husband, children and faith. For all of her beauty, grace, and style, there was steel underneath.
Mrs. Sasser traveled the world with her beloved husband as she had a deep love for life.
Mrs. Sasser was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Willie O'Conner Sasser; son, Robert Sasser; grandson, Mark Hutson and great-grandchild, Casey Hutson. She is survived by her daughters, Melody Sasser of Savannah and Ceryle Stewart and husband Charles of Savannah; son, John O'Conner Sasser and wife Annette of Savannah; eight grandchildren; Michael Hutson, David Hutson, Candace Ririe, April Riley, Summer Rozier, Amber Andrews, Kim Thyer and Kate Bernier; thirteen great-grandchildren and four great great-grandchildren.
From her children: "not time, not space, not even death will ever separate us from her. She carried us inside of her and now we carry her inside of us. If we could have chosen, we would have picked no other than for her to be our lifelong friend and our Mother".
The family will be receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at the Greenwich Section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
Remembrances may be made to Hospice Savannah, P.O. Box 13190, Savannah, GA 31416.
Melody, I have been wondering about June as I hadn't heard from her since she left here several years ago. I knew she was concerned about her heart then. I loved her so much and I can still see her and my brother skating together. I wish you could have seen them. They were just outstanding and beautiful together. I loved my trip out there to meet everyone and I miss you Melody & Candace. You had a beautiful and lovely mother and I will miss her too. Love to all of you. Patsy

I am so sorry for the passing of your mother. I have so many great memories of her and my mother at the golf club and through the years. She always brightened up the room when she was around. Both of my parents enjoyed the long time friendship of both of your parents and always spoke so kindly of them as friends. As a child and young man, I remember many times they took trips together for golf, along w/ several other couples, and they all seem to enjoy life greatly during those healthier days. She will be missed by all and my prayers are with your entire family during this time of loss and healing.
