Bronx, NY – Bro. Jack Godfrey Robertson, F.M.S., died February 11, 2012 at St. Patrick's Home in Bronx, NY.
The Savannah native, born April 4, 1919 to John and Sybilla Hansen Robertson, was a Marist Brother for 71 years, receiving the Marist Habit on July 26, 1941.
He obtained his initial training for the religious life at St. Ann's Novitiate and Marian College in Poughkeepsie, NY, and professed his first vows in 1942.
His first teaching post was Boys Catholic High School in Augusta, GA, from 1944 – 1945, then at Mt. Saint Michael Academy, Bronx, NY, from 1945 – 1948 and again 1979 -1981. In 1947 he professed his Perpetual Vows in Esopus, NY. From 1948 -1949 he taught at St. Ann's Academy, New York, NY. He received a BS in Education from Fordham University in 1949 and a MAO from Staley College in Brookline, MA in 1955.
From 1949 – 1966 he taught at Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, MA where he later served two years as assistant principal. He attended his Second Novitiate in Fribourg, Switzerland in 1966, and then continued his teaching at Marist High School in Chicago through 1970.
From 1972 – 1979 he taught at St. Mary's High School in Manhasset, NY and from 1981 – 1990 he was at Cardinal Spellman High School, New York, NY.
He spent his summers from 1951 – 1991 at Camp Marist which was a summer camp for boys and girls in the White Mountain region of New Hampshire. Many of those years he was director of the waterfront and trained and instructed life guards. They named the beach at the camp "Godfrey Beach" after him.
He retired in 1990 to Champagnat Hall in Bronx, NY.
Surviving are two blood brothers, James Robertson and Raymond Robertson. He was preceded in death by his parents and 5 blood brothers, Joseph, Michael, Edgar, Gilbert, and Siegvart Robertson.
A funeral mass was celebrated at Mount Saint Michael, Bronx, NY, on February 14, 2012. He was buried in the Marist Brothers Cemetery in Esopus, NY on February 15, 2012.
