Mary Alice Johnson Wells

Mary Alice Johnson Wells, 83, passed away peacefully Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at Candler Hospital surrounded by her family. She was born May 28, 1928 in Liberty County and was a current resident of Summer Breeze on Wilmington Island, Georgia.

Mary graduated from Bradwell Institute in Hinesville. She then moved to Savannah where she received a Business degree from Draughn's Business College. She served for 26 years as Executive Director for the March of Dimes covering 20 counties in Southeast Georgia to include Chatham. Her largest accomplishment was her Walk-A-Thon fundraiser involving several thousands of volunteers raising a record number of funds for our area. She retired in 1990. She was an active member of Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church and the Sunday School Fellowship Class for over 50 years. She was also a member of the Islands Garden Club & Botanical Gardens.

She is survived by her twin daughters, Sharon McIntosh Olin and Karon Turner Vic; grandchildren, John Turner, Amanda Turner & Hans McIntosh; great grandchildren, Dylan Turner & Lily Turner; brother, Carl Johnson Myrtle of Cartersville, Ga., sister, Aline Laufer, of Hampton, Virginia; sisters-in-law, Elaine Johnson and Margaret Johnson; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, John Daniel Wells; her parents, Malena & Wesley Johnson; and two brothers, Martin Johnson and Philip Johnson.

Visitation: 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Thursday, February 23, 2012 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel.

Funeral: 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 24, 2012 in the Islands Chapel of Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors conducted by Reverend M. Creede Hinshaw.

Entombment: Forest Lawn Memory Garden Mausoleum.

Remembrances: Memorial donations in memory of Mary can be made to Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church, 429 Abercorn Street, Savannah, GA 31401.
