GUEST BOOK

To Ana, Will and the Deaver family, Bill and I started our MA programs at UVa together. He became like a brother to me. I have so many wonderful memories of laughing hard and working hard together. Bill was a one of a kind: a true Southern gentleman, yet also a rascal, a tremendously insightful scholar and yet an instinctive outdoorsman. Bill was a true Renaissance man and I both loved and admired him tremendously. Although we'd lost touch in the last 10 years or so, I have never forgotten him and always intended to get to Savannah for a visit. I am so very, very sorry for your loss, for the world's loss. Mi más profundo pésame.

- Pamela J McNab, CULPEPER, VA

Dear Dr. Torres, I was so sorry and shocked to hear of Dr. Deaver's passing. He was one of my favorite professors and he helped to make my time at Armstrong a very enjoyable experience. I also enjoyed our student trip to Mexico, and he was very patient with mi malo and pobre Espanol. As you may remember, I was arrested almost 10 years ago. Bill was one of a handful of people who wrote a support letter for me. I still have the letter, and I will always cherish it. I am home now. So if you need anything in the weeks or months ahead, please don't hesitate to contact me, and I will do what I can. In the meantime, I will be praying for you and your family. In Christian love, Mark Lucas.

- Mark Kit Lucas, Pooler, GA

Dr. Deaver was one of my favorite professors in Armstrong. I admired his dedication and passion for Latin American Literature. Although I (shamefully) detested Cervantes, Dr. Deaver always found ways to make it fun and whimsical! As a native Spanish speaker myself, he challenged me to work harder and improve every essay. Recently, we had talked about organizing a summer trip with AASU Alumni to a fun destination, and I was super excited! WE have lost one of the best for sure!. Dr. Torres (Anita), I am deeply saddened for your loss. You and your family are in my prayers! I hope you find peace in knowing how much he was loved!

- Audrey Rodriguez, Savannah, GA

I'll treasure the memories I have of Dr. Deaver. It was an honor to be your student and I will always remember you with a smile. Your teaching style was amazing and made the long hours go by fast. You touched so many lives with your caring and loving personality, an incredible person with a big heart. My prayers go to Ana, Will and all his family during this difficult time. Dear Ana, I wish I could be there to give you a big hug, all my love and prayers to you. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Matthew 5:4

- Ana Sanders, Alexandria, VA

Dr. Deaver was an incredible person and professor. While Spanish was not my strongest subject as an undergrad, Dr. Deaver went out of his way to go over anything and everything that did not come easy. Even when I was not taking his class, he never hesitated to say hello and see how my day was going! Condolences to his family. He will certainly be missed by so many on the Armstrong campus.

- Will Vaught, Nashville, TN

- Milena Arqueros, ,

I met Dr. Deavers when he was a teenager living on Turner Rd in Chesterfield County and I was on the local police department. Bill was a fine young man, very active in sports,a good student, who was polite and very respectful. He never let me forget the time that I helped him. We stayed in touch through his years in college, graduate school, and international travels. Sometime after that our lives became busy and we did not keep in touch as often. I was shocked to learn of his untimely death. Bill was a great guy with a big heart who touched many lives. He will be missed. My sincere sympathy to his family at this most difficult time.

- W. A. Jones, Chesterfield, VA

Dr. Deaver was among the top professors I had while at Armstrong in 2004. I had the honor to take several of his classes and I quickly developed admiration for his teaching style. It did not matter if we were learning intensive grammar or reading complex literature, he knew how to connect and challenge each student. He was also my advisor, and he deeply cared about his students’ goals. AASU has lost one of the best. May God give him eternal rest. Dr. Torres, I am deeply saddened for your loss. You and your family are in my heart and mind. I am sending prayers your way.

There are never any words... I think that is why we have memories instead. Thank you for so many great AASU memories, Dr. Deaver! You taught me how to read Garcia Marquez, how to keep cool when the airline loses your luggage in Mexico for three days, and how to barter...even if it's just for an extra day on that paper! My love to you and your family, Dr. Torres. Casey and I are thinking of you...

Dr. Deaver not only made me comfortable speaking Spanish but made me fall in love with the language and culture that surrounds it. Having him stop in the Writing Center to grab candy and chat was always a highlight of my day. Few professors care for their students and he was one of them. Great professor and even better man.

There will never be another person in Armstrong (GSU) like Dr. Deaver. He was funny, caring and all around a great person. He made an impact on many lives and will always be remembered. I give my condolences to his wife and children during this hard time.

- Heidi Cardona-Tejera, Savannah , Ga

Thank you Dr. Deaver for everything you did for me and my classmates when we met you in Chile in 2006. I can’t thank you enough for being a loving and caring human being. You were always concerned about the well being of others. You will be truly missed. May God give your family peace in these difficult times. Thanks God for the opportunity of having met you. Hugo Arancibia.

- Hugo Arancibia Lopez, La Serena, Chile

There are never any words... I think that is why we have memories instead. Thank you for so many great AASU memories, Dr. Deaver! You taught me how to read Garcia Marquez, how to keep cool when the airline loses your luggage in Mexico for three days, and how to barter...even if it's just for an extra day on that paper! My love to you and your family, Dr. Torres. Casey and I are thinking of you...

Dr. Deaver was a kind and helpful professor. Spanish was not my forte, but with his teaching and assistance, I was able to understand the subject and do well in the class. My prayers and condolences are extended for his family and all the people’s lives he’s touched.

We shared some fine times, organized and backyard football, sleepovers (where everyone tried to scare the others) etc.. Times that are etched in my mind forever! Thanks my Friend, Grace and Peace! David

Dr. Deaver made learning Spanish enjoyable at a time I wasn't really feeling the language. His gentle soul and wisdom will be deeply missed around the grounds and halls of AASU (GSU). Still, his presence will always remain for those who know him well. I send my prayers to Dr. Torres and the entire family during this time.

I'm so sorry to hear of Dr. Deaver's sudden passing. I hope the pain lessens each day and that those closest to him will soon be able to remember him with a smile instead of tears. He will be missed by so many!

- Jessica Barahona, Austin, TX

Dr Deaver was an amazing professor. He made me want to learn Spanish just to be able to understand his stories. He is the reason I can read Pablo Neruda without the artifice of translation. The world lost an amazing teacher, as all these testimonies show.

Dr. Deaver not only made me comfortable speaking Spanish but made me fall in love with the language and culture that surrounds it. Having him stop in the Writing Center to grab candy and chat was always a highlight of my day. Few professors care for their students and he was one of them. Great professor and even better man.

- Noah Muszall, Savannah, GA

I just want to say that the world lost a great man too soon. My condolences to the family.
