Betty Meagher Johnpeter

Betty Meagher Johnpeter
Betty Meagher Johnpeter of Savannah, Georgia died Thursday, April 19, 2012, at Marsh View Senior Living.
Born Feb. 10, 1922 in Orient, IL, to George and Myrtle Camp Meagher, Mrs. Johnpeter was raised in West Frankfort, IL. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Illinois-Champaign. During World War II, she played an important role in developing antibiotics while employed as a bacteriologist for Abbott Research Laboratories in Chicago, IL. Her work was recognized in several scientific articles and books.
She married Charles Albert Johnpeter of Posey, IL, Sept. 21, 1946, in Champaign, IL. After raising their children in Athens, TN, they were able to travel extensively, exploring dozens of countries and delighting in the cultures they discovered. She continued to travel on her own after her husband's death in 1989.
Moving to Savannah in 1991, Mrs. Johnpeter continued her passion for exquisite hand quilting and sewing, reading, and playing bridge. She maintained many friendships through Savannah Newcomers Club, The Landings New Neighbors and participation in many of their activities.
Survivors include three children: Johanna Johnpeter Hutson of Savannah; Charles Albert Johnpeter Sue of Naperville, IL; and Sarah Louise Johnpeter of Savannah; four grandchildren: William Charles Hutson, Thomas Johnpeter Hutson Lara, Elizabeth Johnpeter Anderson Dennis, and Anna Whaley Johnpeter; three great-grandchildren: Natalie Claire Hutson, Dennis Zachary and Charlotte Elizabeth Anderson; and a sister, Georgia Meagher of Atlanta. She leaves dear friend and longtime caregiver Sylvia Jackson of Savannah. The family also wishes to thank caregiver Priscilla Collins, also of Savannah. All our lives were enhanced by having been touched by her intelligence, creativity, and love.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 27 at Fox & Weeks, 7200 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 28 at Skidaway Island United Methodist Church, 54 Diamond Causeway. A private graveside service will follow later at City Cemetery, Carlyle, IL.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial gifts be designated to breast cancer research at Mayo Clinic, Department of Development, 200 First Street SW, Rochester, MN 55905, or online at www.mayoclinic.org.

Sarah, Johanna and Charles, I was so sad to learn of your Mother's passing. She was a wonderful aunt. I have fond early memories of her and though we didn't get to see her very often, I always felt a closeness. Our entire family so appreciated her loving care and visits after our own Mother's death. Know that we're thinking of you. Blessings now and always! Love, Karen

I am so sorry to learn of your mother's death which was in the Athens paper. I am Mattie Lou Hawkins's oldest daughter, and your parents and mine were very good friends. Mother died this Jan. at the age of 97. She often spoke of Betty and wondered how she was doing. Perhaps they are again fabric shopping together in Heaven!

Hi! Johnpeters, As you go through the next couple days preparing to walk the last miles, my prayer and thoughts will be with the entire family. I want to thank the entire family for letting me be a part of your moms life. We have shared some good times together. I wouldn't have given that up for nothing in the world. Mrs.Johnperter will always hold a special place in my heart. I can remember the times we would ride in town and go to the Golden Coral to have lunch. I would seat her and go to the food bar and pick out for favorite foodscollard greens,blackpeas,mac/cheese,and some good ole fried chicken. She was such a LADY that she would not eat until I came back to the table with my food. I can go on and on about Mrs. Johnpeters, but a thoundsand words can not express my feelings for her. weeping may edure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.

Since the passing several years ago of our mother, Kathleen, Betty's older sister, Betty has been the lovely and gracious matriarch of our family. We were most fortunate to have spent time with her at Skidaway, where she was the epitome of the southern hostess. She will be missed, but ever in our thoughts and memories.
