John S. Tyson III

John S. Tyson, III, 82, died Sunday, April 29, 2012 under the care of Hospice Savannah.
Mr. Tyson was born in Millen, GA on August 7, 1929, the son of the late John Southwell Tyson, Jr. and Catherine Turner Tyson. John was raised in Folkston, GA. He graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology where he earned a degree in Electrical Engineering. He was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and while in college as a freshman he met the love of his life, Mary Stubbs with whom he enjoyed 59 years of loving marriage. Upon graduating from college he enlisted in the Unites States Navy where he served proudly. After his military tenure he moved to Savannah where he worked for Union Camp for a short period of time and ultimately began working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers where he retired in 1989 as an Electrical Engineer working in the design branch of the Engineering Division. He received many commendations through the years for his outstanding service there.
Mr. Tyson was a member of the First Baptist Church of Savannah where he had served as a Deacon and on various church committees. He was also a member of the Savannah Yacht Club, The English Speaking Union and The Telfair Museum of Art as well as being a former member of the Savannah Jaycees.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Tyson was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Tyson Wilson. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Stubbs Tyson; daughter, Dr. Mary Lynn Tyson and son-in-law, Dr. Philip Andrew Horton, Colonel, U.S. Army Medical Corps, both of Augusta; granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Horton; nephews, Craig Wilson Marla and Robert Wilson; niece, Catherine Wilson; cousins, Holly Dean Omar El Khalidi, Sumaya El Khalidi, Valerie Nix Patrick Murphy, Jane Nix and Millie W. Mallory.
The visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Savannah with burial following at the Greenwich Section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 9551, Savannah, GA 31412, Hospice Savannah, P.O. Box 13190, Savannah, GA 31416 or a favorite charity.
