Donald Alan Harvey

SAVANNAH – Donald Harvey, 75, died Sunday, May 13, 2012, at St. Joseph's Hospital. Don's professional career grew along with the Information Technology Revolution beginning around the time of the first huge mainframes and stretched past invention of today's Internet. He started as a computer operator working on mainframes which held about as much information as today's cell phones and worked his way up to Computer Systems Analyst and Programmer in a client/server environment networked across large campuses and all over the country. Don worked many years at both Memorial Hospital and Union Camp/International Paper until he retired in 1999. In this industry in Savannah, he was well known among his peers as the best there was. Anyone who has worked IT during those years is very much aware of how rapidly technology changed during this time and Donald never blinked.

He is predeceased by his parents, Dennis and Beulah Harvey, his brother, Howard Harvey, and a beloved grandson, Joshua Harvey. He is survived by his two sons; Greg Harvey of Hollister, CA Patricia and Jeff Harvey of Melbourne, FL, his sister, Janet Lowe Joe of Cheifland, FL as well as 3 grandchildren: Philip Harvey of Oakland, CA, Jeffrey Harvey of Melbourne, FL and Gabriela Harvey of Melbourne, FL

Donald was an extremely devoted father who had an unusually strong work ethic. He was well known for working late hours to solve problems and still finding time to coach his sons' Little League teams. He was a big fan of Peanuts and even made a point of always finding a "Charlie Brown" Christmas tree! He was a member of an email group that delighted in sending jokes to each other and was very devoted to helping feral cats in his neighborhood. His family, his friends, his neighbors, and his cats will miss him deeply.

A private Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, May 27th. Contact Jeff at 355-7491 or 321 987-7301 for details. Please send any donations to Christian Children's Fund, The Humane Society or Best Friends Animal Society.

GUEST BOOK

I was a secretary in the Computer Dept at Memorial Medical Center and remember Don quite well. He was always very polite and nice to work for. I was very sad to hear of his passing. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time.

- Ann Norton, Savannah, GA

Don was a kind and caring person. I worked with him for many years at Union Camp. He was a true professional and always willing to help. God Bless his family during this time of sorrow.

- Monisha Gaines, Savannah, GA

I first met Don at Memorial Medical Center in 1971. As a result of Don’s professional and personal character, we quickly became friends and our bond grew stronger over time. Even with high pressure jobs, we always managed to have a little fun along the way, and a few evening beers and pizza to discuss our family life, local and world issues, and our life at the medical center. Don was a true gentleman, always courteous to others, and a true friend. He was a dedicated parent to his two sons and always stood with pride of their behalf. He was a member of our wedding party in 1980, a true friend of our family. I have never forgotten this gentle man, his perseverance in his profession and in his family life. He was an unselfish man, often putting others before himself. He will be dearly missed by his family and those who had the opportunity to be his friend. Our sincere heartfelt condolences go out to both Greg and Jeff, the apple of their father’s eye, and to all family members.
