Alton D. Kitchings, 88, died Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at Memorial University Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. He attended local schools. Following graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy and served in the South Pacific aboard the U.S.S. Massachusetts during World War II. He graduated from the University of Georgia Lumpkin Law School in August , 1949. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Temple where he served as a Sunday School teacher of various ages and also on numerous committees, including positions with the Day School.
He served as Assistant City Attorney, City of Savannah 1957-1965; President, Georgia Trial Lawyers Association 1985-1986 receiving the "Heritage Award". He was a recipient of the "Tradition of Excellence" Award from the Georgia Bar Association's General Practice and Trial Section. Also, he is listed in "Who's Who in American Law".
He is survived by his beloved wife, Gloria; daughters, Bili K. Sigmon, Rhonda K. Sutlive Charlie, Allison K. Hearn; grandchildren, Jennifer S. Thompson Robert, Ria McCall Fritts, Kason P. Fritts Whitney, Carly A. Hearn, Charlie Sutlive Nell, Mary K. Sutlive; great grandchildren, Kylie, Amelia, Ward and Mae; several nieces and nephews.
Honorary Pallbearers: Members, Savannah Bar Association.
Visitation: Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
Funeral: Friday at 11:00 a.m., Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
Burial: Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
