Philip Lee Wettengel

Philip Lee Wettengel, 82 – Died peacefully at his home on Tuesday July 24th surrounded by his wife and children. He is survived by his wife Sue Foster Wettengel and his children and grandchildren Philip F. and Anne Wettengel Philip and Elizabeth of Worcester MA, Anne Wettengel and Joe Harris JP and Caleb of North Haven, CT and Steven L. and Ellen Wettengel Katherine and Ryan of Medway MA. He was born in Enid, OK in 1930. Son of Wendell Philip Wettengel and Mattie Shives Wettengel. He spent his early years in Oklahoma City. His family later moved to Carmel, CA where Phil attended high school. He lettered in several sports, enjoyed the beaches and skiing at Yosemite with his many friends. He graduated from the Oklahoma University School of Journalism and was also a member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. Phil and Sue met early in their college days. They were married in Tulsa OK on December 27, 1951. Phil was in the ROTC program and after graduation they moved to El Paso, TX for a two year assignment in the Air Force including Phil's TDY to Guam. Phil returned to OU and earned a Law Degree with honors and held the position Editor of the Law Review. He started his career as a lawyer with AT&T in St. Louis. He also worked at Michigan Bell and New York Bell where he was involved with the divestiture of AT&T. He retired as Vice-President and General Counsel of Wisconsin Bell Ameritech after 35 years. Sue and Phil retired to The Landings in Savannah GA in 1991 where Phil played golf with his many new friends and also volunteered at the mighty Eighth Air Force Museum. He was a member of the Skidaway Island United Methodist Church. Phil and Sue enjoyed traveling together with trips to Sweden, England, Austria, Portugal, Panama Canal, and many other destinations. Phil and Sue enjoyed many summers at their cottage in Belgrade Lakes, ME driving their boat to teach the children to waterski and later doing the same for the grandchildren. The family would like to thank Priscilla Collins and her wonderful staff for their care of Phil over the last few months. The memorial service will be Monday July 30th at Skidaway Island United Methodist Church at 11:00 am with reception to follow in Fellowship Hall. Interment will be at Pine Grove Cemetery in the family plot in Belgrade Lakes, ME. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be given to Skidaway Island United Methodist Church, Wesley Community Center or a charity of choice.
