Geraldine Elizabeth Meyer

Geraldine Elizabeth Meyer neé Mendres died on October 6, 2012 under the care of Hospice of Savannah, in the presence of her devoted husband of 46 years, Gerard Meyer.

Geraldine was born in New York, NY on January 30, 1944 and grew up in Avon-by-the Sea, NJ. Upon her marriage, she moved to Morristown, NJ where she lived for many years before her retirement to The Landings in Savannah, GA in 2001. Geraldine graduated St. Rose High School, Belmar, NJ in 1961 and graduated Cabrini College, Radnor Pennsylvania with a teaching degree in 1965.

Besides her husband, Geraldine is survived by her beloved daughter Jennifer A. Meyer Jaso, son-in-law Eric Jaso and adored grandson, Francis Xavier, age 6 1/2 years; as well as by her devoted sister, Maureen Mendres Ward, brother-in-law Richard J. Ward, Jr, nephew Richard J. Ward III and his wife Carolyn. Geraldine had a very special relationship with Mary-Beth DeLaney Hahn, husband Nicholas Hahn and son Nicholas, age 12 years, whom Geraldine lovingly considered her "second grandson." Geraldine was predeceased by her parents Grace Elizabeth Flannery Mendres and Joseph Paul Mendres.

Geraldine taught first grade at the Bee Meadow Elementary School in Whippany, NJ for over twenty-five years. As a result of Geraldine's professional leadership and devotion, the U.S. Department of Education designated Bee Meadow a National Blue Ribbon School for the school year 1998-1999. The same year, Geraldine was voted Hanover Township, NJ Teacher of the Year. Upon her retirement to The Landings, Geraldine volunteered in the reading program at St. James Catholic School in Savannah. A longtime member of Spring Brook Country Club in Morristown, NJ, Geraldine was an avid golfer. In Savannah, she was an active member of The Landings Golf Club, where on her 60th birthday, Geraldine made a hole-in-one.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday in St. James Catholic Church, Savannah at 9:30 a.m.

Burial will be at a later date in Holy Rood Cemetery, Morristown, NJ.

Memorial donations may be made to The Curtis and Elizabeth Anderson Cancer Institute at Memorial University Medical Center, 4700 Waters Avenue, Savannah, GA 31404.

Dear Gerard and family, We are so sorry to hear of Gerry's passing. She fought a long battle and always kept her smile and positive attitude throughout the ordeal. We watched with great joy at her joy this past spring/summer while she enjoyed having your daughter, son-in-law and grandchild here with you at the pool. She was a beautiful woman, and we are so glad we knew her. Our prayers go out to all of you at this most difficult time. We are so sorry we are not in Savannah to attend the Memorial Mass for her, but you are in our thoughts and prayers.
