Carolyn Warnell Bryan

Mrs. Carolyn Warnell Bryan, 97, passed away on October 21, 2012.
Mrs. Bryan was preceded in death by her parents Daniel Brooks and Mary "Mamie" Kahrs Warnell, one sister Anna Dorothy Warnell, and three brothers: Harold Brooks Warnell, William Alvin Warnell, and Charles Frederick Warnell.
Carolyn Warnell Bryan was born February 23, 1915, in Groveland, Georgia. As a native of Bryan County, she attended Bryan County schools and graduated from Bryan County High School. Mrs. Bryan attended the University of Georgia and graduated with a degree in Home Economics. While a student at the University of Georgia, she was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority. Following graduation, she taught home economics for one year in Lyons and was home management supervisor in the Farm Security Administration in Dawson for four years. In 1949 Mrs. Bryan became a Home Economist with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service in Chatham County. During her 25 years of service in Chatham County, she worked closely with young people in the 4-H Club. As a result of the success of the 4-H program, Mrs. Bryan received the Superior Service Award and the Silver Key Award.
During her professional career, Mrs. Bryan was active in many professional organizations including Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Georgia Home Economics Association, American Home Economics Association, and the Georgia Association of Extension Home Economists, serving as President for one term. In 1988, Mrs. Bryan was honored by the American Home Economics Association for 50 years of membership in the organization. She was a life member of Epsilon Sigma Phi National Honorary Extension Fraternity. Mrs. Bryan was active in numerous civic and philanthropic organizations including the Chamber of Commerce of Savannah, Better Business Bureau of Savannah, Savannah Business and Professional Women's Club, American Cancer Society Chatham Unit, Coastal Empire Fair Association, Community Cardio Vascular Council, the Wednesday Morning Study Club, and P.E.O.
In 1977, Mrs. Bryan became a member of the President's Club of the University of Georgia. She and her sister, Dorothy, were principle contributors to the Daniel Brooks Warnell School of Forestry and National Resources of the University of Georgia. In 1988, Mrs. Bryan was named an Honorary Alumnus of the School of Forestry. Mrs. Bryan continued her support of UGA's Daniel Brooks Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources with a generous gift of property in Effingham County for the establishment of the Dorothy Warnell Research, Education and Demonstration Forest and Mary Kahrs Warnell Forest Education Center.
Mrs. Carolyn W. Bryan was a devoted member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Bryan is survived by five nephews and two nieces: Brooks Warnell of Blitchton, GA; Herbert Karen Warnell of Blitchton, GA; Danny Lora Warnell of Bakersville, NC; Frederick Kay Warnell of Richmond Hill, GA; Mary V. Warnell of Pembroke, GA; Carolyn W. Billy Downs of Lanier, GA; and David Macy Warnell of Claxton, GA; great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
The visitation for Mrs. Bryan will be 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
Graveside service will be held Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Groveland Cemetery, Groveland, Georgia with Pastor Peter J. Hartmann of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating.
