Ruby Garvin Reed

Ruby Garvin Reed
Savannah- Ruby Garvin Reed passed away peacefully at her home Thursday afternoon, 1 November 2012.
Ruby was born 7 January 1920 near Grays, SC. Her family moved to Savannah when she was 10 years old. She graduated from Commercial High School in 1939 and married Marcus Fred Reed in 1940. During World War II, Ruby worked in the shipyard while Fred was overseas serving in the US Army. After World War II, Ruby returned to being a homemaker and had one child born in 1946. In the early 1960's she returned to work as a medical secretary to Dr. James Metts, Sr. Ruby worked for Dr. Metts, Sr. and later for Dr. James Metts, Jr. for 50 years. She was a member of Mt Carmel United Methodist Church near Grays, SC.
Ruby enjoyed being with friends and family and shopping. She was always looking for a bargain, particularly in thrift stores. She also enjoyed gardening and definitely had a green thumb. Give her a cutting of almost anything and she could probably root it.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Edith Delilah Thomas Garvin; father, Paul Dexter Garvin; husband, Marcus Fred Reed; brother, James Thomas Garvin, and sister, Alma Garvin Woo.
Surviving is her son, Don Reed, her best friend for over 70 years, Geneva Hodges Breland, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 3, 2012 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
Graveside Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 4, 2012 at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
