Nellie Lanier Smiley passed away on November 21, 2012 under the care of Hospice Savannah.
She was born in Savannah, Georgia on June 5, 1919 to Mr. and Mrs. Arthur T. Lanier. Nellie lived her life devoted to her family, always putting them ahead of herself. Nellie was a member of Calvary Baptist Temple from childhood as a Busy Bee and continued to be active through The Love Sunday School Class for many years.
Nellie was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, William "Jack" Smiley. Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and JoAnne Smiley of Knoxville, TN, Julian and Nancy Smiley of Knoxville, TN, and Dr. Ronald and Terri Smiley of Savannah, GA; grandchildren whom she loved dearly, Todd Smiley, Karen Smiley, Christine Jason Vines, Jes Karen Smiley, Claire Mike Huenefeld, Charlie Smiley, and Kieffer Parker; great-grandchildren, Jay and Jack Smiley and Henry and Evee Huenefeld.
The family is grateful to Dr. Stephen Malone and the staff and caregivers at Habersham House for their loving care and support.
The family will be receiving friends Friday from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
The funeral service will be Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel with burial following at Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park.
I miss her DEEPLY. I'm one of the Habersham House staff members, the BEST PLACE to live and work here in Savannah. Mrs Smiley was a sweet heart and always wanted to take care of me. I miss her so much. To all the family, thanks for 'sharing' her with us. You're in my prayers.

So sorry to hear of Mrs. Smiley's passing. I only knew her through my daughter Mary who is Dr. Smiley's assisstant.I heard of Me Maw as she was lovingly known often through Mary. God Bless her. She is now with the Angels.
