Departure Date February 7, 2013
Patrick Joseph Lynch, III, known to friends as Pat or PJ, was born in Irish Harlem in New York City, the son of Martha Jean Stokes and Patrick J. Lynch II. He attended Manhattan High School of Aviation Trades, then joined the United States Navy. Upon leaving the USN, he started his civilian aviation career at Northeast Colonial Airways, then on to Trans World Airways, while attending night classes at Casey Jones School of Avionics now known as Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology. He accepted a position at Delta Airways, and then worked at Lockheed Aircraft Service at Kennedy Airport for over 11 years. Afterwards he moved to Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corp. During the time from 1963 to 1973 he obtained his FAA-approved Airframe and Powerplant License, Inspection Authorization Certificate, an FAA-Designated Manufacturer Inspection Representative and Designated Airframe Representative, and worked on obtaining a Single Engine Light aircraft propeller-driven Pilot's License. He was the original Chief of Maintenance and Chief Inspector for the Gulfstream Aerospace Flying Club. While at Grumman in Long Island he worked on the Lunar Excursion Module, the OA project, and the F-14, E-2A, C-2A, G-I and EA-16 Seaplane projects. With the rest of the project team, he obtained an autographed copy of the photo of the astronauts who landed on the moon. He loved working on the moon project.
In 1967 he moved to Savannah with Grumman and helped establish the company which became Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. Early retirement from GAC enabled him to start his own aviation consultant firm, which involved world-wide travel with owners of all types of business aircraft, and various flight operations, sales, imports/exports and FAA-approved programs.
He received the DOT-FAA Charles Taylor "Master Mechanic" Award in 2006 for 50 years of professionalism, knowledge and safety throughout his career. He was a past member of the American Legion, Chatham County Veterans Council, Coastal Empire Chapter Professional Aircraft Management Association, and past President of the Savannah Chapter of The Navy League of the United States.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Grace Rose Lynch; three children, Catherine A. Lynch and Robyn B. Garnett of Alexandria, Va., Christopher E. Lynch of Midway, Ga., and Timothy P. and Kelly Lynch of Dalton, Ga.; grandchildren, Chase and Alexis Lynch, and Diane Lynch; two sisters, Roni Mrs. Nick Menrath of Bethpage, LI, and Terry Mrs. Tony Ferrante of Buffalo, NY; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was a member of St. Francis of the Islands Episcopal Church. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Saturday at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel and the service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Sunday at St. Francis of the Islands Episcopal Church with interment in the memorial gardens of the church.
