Mr. Robert J. Bob Baechle.
Robert J. Baechle, 89, of Savannah, passed from this life to his heavenly reward on March 3, 2013 at The Oaks at The Marshes at Skidaway Island under the care of Hospice Savannah, and surrounded by his loving family.
Mr. Baechle, a devoted family man, is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Nona Kunz Baechle and seven children, Robert L. Baechle of Dallas, TX, Daniel A. Baechle of Yorkville, IL Kathryn, Clare Dykeman of Framingham, MA David, Ellen McCabe of Hot Springs, AR Patrick, Joseph Baechle of Savannah, James Baechle of Cumming, GA Darlene, and Nona Dutton of Savannah Kevin. Mr. Baechle was also the father of the late Barbara Lindsey of Cincinnati, OH Tom.
He is also survived by eleven grandchildren, Christina Germann, Adrienne Orr, Robert Baechle, Daniel M. Baechle, Erin Lindsey, Lauren McCabe, Ryan McCabe, Audrey Baechle, Rachel Dutton, Conor Dykeman, and Brandon Baechle, and great granddaughter Lindsey Orr, a sister Shirley Taphorn of Belleville IL, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Eugene and Ellanora Baechle, and his sister Dorothy Stephens.
Bob was born on December 24, 1923 in Belleville, IL. He was a veteran of World War II, on active duty from 1944-1945, serving in the U.S. Army as a bombardier in Europe.
After receiving a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Illinois in 1949, Bob had a long career with Standard Oil Amoco from 1951 until his retirement in 1989, in positions ranging from Chemical Engineer to Refinery General Manager.
He enjoyed fishing, boating, bridge and world travel, especially Alaska and Australia. Bob enjoyed family road trip vacations as well as spending a week each summer for many years with his family, children and grandchildren, at Indiana Beach. He was a lifelong fan of the University of Illinois Fighting Illini and the St. Louis Cardinals. He was a Rotarian and enjoyed their camaraderie. A devout Catholic and prayerful man, Bob was a most charitable member of his community. He was a communicant and Lector at St. James Catholic Church.
Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., with a Vigil Service at 6:00 p.m., Thursday, March 7, 2013 at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 8, 2013 at St. James Catholic Church with The Reverend Mark Ross, celebrant.
Burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery.
Remembrances may be made to St. James Catholic Church, 8412 Whitfield Ave, Savannah, GA 31406.
