Celebrating the life of
Naegeli Clare von Bergen Metcalf
April 27, 1932 - July 08, 2013
Naegeli Clare von Bergen Metcalf peacefully slipped into the company of angels on July 8, 2013 to share her love of music with them.
She was born April 27th, 1932 in York Nebraska to her father, Arthur E. von Bergen and mother, Clare Atkinson.
At the age of one she showed the first inkling of her musical talent while keeping perfect time with music at her sister's kindergarten class. At the age of 4 she had already memorized her sister's music lessons. Her musical career was off to a good start after finding a remarkable teacher, Beth Miller who guided her and developed her talent. Naegeli was first a student and then a teacher at the now well-known "Rocky Ridge Music Camp" in Colorado. Naegeli taught in Beth's studio while in school.
Naegeli graduated from Lincoln High School in Lincoln, NE and attended Wesleyan College where she graduated with honors and later received an "Alumni of the Year" Award. A year was spent at Julliard in New York. She earned a Masters of Musical Performance at the University of Indiana, however, following her heart, she chose to share her unique gift for teaching to many hundreds of students young and old. She taught at Gustavus Adolphus in St. Paul MN, then Wesleyan in Macon GA and Armstrong Atlantic College in Savannah GA.
When her husband, Roger Metcalf was stationed in Germany, she accompanied him and continued to teach children of other families there as well as to travel widely on the continent.
When they returned she realized that her true talent lay in teaching in her own studio where she could teach and encourage each student's individual's needs and styles. Many of her students were recipients of honors in local and statewide competitions. Other students went on to share their love of music with others.
Naegeli was the recipient of many well deserved honors. Among them were The Georgia Music Teacher's Assoc "Teacher of the Year" and in 2007 she was awarded the "National Music Teacher of the Year" award at the International Music teachers Association in Toronto, Canada. She was a member locally of several organizations, among them Georgia Music Teachers Association, Savannah Music Teachers Associatio and The Friends of Music in Savannah.
Naegeli is survived by her sister, Sherrill Pratt of Spokane WA and her brother James von Bergen of Sacramento CA, Her nieces Ann Pratt Teberg, Courtney DesMarteau, Nephews Thomas Pratt and Garrett von Bergen, 3 grand nieces, 1 great nephew, 3 great grand nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 18, 2013, at Independent Presbyterian Church followed by a reception at the church.
I regret that I did not make the effort to talk with Naegeli the past few years. As an aspiring young pianist in Lincoln back in the 1950s, Naegeli gave me much attention in Lincoln and Estes Park at Rocky Ridge Music Center. While I did not select music for a career, I will never forget the musical experiences I had with Naegeli. She was an excellent musician in my judgement with a knack for communicating with students. Her life was a blessing for enumerable students and friends. Her family can feel comforted in having shared her life with them, as I do. Bill Gingles

Naegeli was a most amazing musician, pianist, and pedagogue. Her passion for, and love of, music, her dedication to her students and her art were extraordinary. I was so privileged through the years to have the opportunity to witness first-hand her teaching, and to hear her remarkable students. She was the soul of integrity and a passionate advocate for the art of the piano. We have lost a truly amazing friend, artist, pedagogue, and pianist. Her influence will go with me throughout my life. My deepest sympathy to Sherrill, Ann, Jim, and the family.

I’ve been taught by Mrs. Metcalf for 6 years, and she was a wonderful teacher. She was always kind and patient with her teaching. Condolences to the family she left behind. May her love of music be shared by all of us! ----- Angela Young I really miss Mrs. Metcalf. She is very nice. I never thought this would happen. I am very sad. I have only been playing piano for two years with her… ----- Alysa Young Mrs. Metcalf gave the last classes to my two daughters on July 7th. She looked full of vigor and played piano with both of my kids. As usual, she always encouraged my kids to play piano better. She was not only teaching kids the skills but also supporting them with the spirits. She was teaching with her heart… Whenever the music sound of piano rises, we will think of Mrs. Metcalf…
- Fen Li, Savannah, GA
Aunt Naegeli visited us nearly every christmas in Spokane; she loved us as if we were her own children. She always gave so much of herself in the gifts she provided our family; gifts that told the story of her life, her memories, and her many experiences and life lessons. She was never without a funny saying about lifes' many trials and tribulations. To her, they always had a silver lining. Her hugs were genuine and full of happiness. We will miss her terribly, and cant wait to see her again in her glory with the Angels.
- Tom Pratt, Spokane, WA
Your talents and wit will be missed. I was honored to be the SMTA President when you became the MTNA Teacher of the Year - like I had something to do with that!
- Donna Dasher, Richmond Hill, GA
Naegeli was a wonderful friend and truly remarkable woman who lived and breathed music wherever she was. In the last decade or so of her life she was in almost constant pain from multiple maladies, yet she still got up every morning and lovingly, patiently, taught as many as 60 piano students a week, frequently from early morning to late evening. She had no children of her own but over her 70 years of teaching she started at age 11 was the musical mother of hundreds of young musicians and mentor to almost as many adult students. Her legacy to the world of classical piano music is HUGE! How lucky we were to have her! My condolences to Sherrill, Jim, and Ann. I will miss her.

Naegeli was a teacher, a friend, and a continuing inspiration to me from the time I was her student at Wesleyan until last week when I visited her in her home in Savannah. During that visit she shared her recital program with me, telling me about each student as if they were her own children. In a sense I have lost a spiritual mother. I know that heavenly choirs are singing at her homecoming and wish for her God's eternal peace.
- Pamela Smith, Atlanta, GA
Naegeli was an inspiration to many students and musicians. I will always remember her making trips into the piano store and leaving with piles of books - her 'weakness' she called it, like a kid in a candy store. Condolences to her family.
- Elizabeth Van Hoy, Savannah, GA
A beautiful and wonderful person. She was an extraordinary teacher and musician. This lady was incapable of making a bad or unmusical sound. She brought the true Russian School of Piano to many of us and we will be forever grateful. She touched all of our lives in a big way. She is loved and will be missed. I will forever remember lessions with her - she was 'one of a kind' - she gave insight into her art that few can ever see.
- Andrew T. Sheils, Jr. M.D., Savannah, GA
Naegeli and I were good friends when at Indiana, working on our master's degrees in piano. She, in fact, was one of my attendants in my wedding in 1960. We stayed in contact for many years following Indiana, but those contacts in the last few years had become fewer and fewer. I am today remembering some really good times and laughs we had, lo those many years ago. Rest in peace, Naegeli. With love, Mona
- Mona Standridge Preuss, Kansas City, MO

Mrs. Metcalf was an unwavering part of our family for the last 25 years. We will miss her terribly, but we will always remember the wonderful musical and life lessons she taught us.
- Maji, Burlington, VT
I played with Mrs. Metcalf for 7 years. She was an amazing teacher. She pulled me out of my shy shell and pushed my boundaries as a musician. She was exceptionally supportive and came with her students to every piano competition. I will not forget those 3 hours drives to Athens, GA so we, her students, could play our 3 minute piece- total time in Athens maybe an hour- then head back home for another 3 hours. I will also never forget her patience as she sat with me as I prepared for my two-hour long senior recital. She was an amazing, loving teacher and a big part of who I am today.
- Kristy Chu, Savannah, GA
I took with Ms. Metcalf all through highschool. She was my reason and my inspiration for continuing on with music in college. I will never forget all the amazing things she taught me, or all the time we spent together. She was truly the most loving, dedicated, and passionate teacher I've ever met. She became an integral part of my family in a very short time. I will always treasure the memories and the time I had with her, as I know all of her students will. Whether it was traveling to competitions, or just staying at the house for a lesson till almost 10 p.m. at night. She will be dearly, dearly missed.
- Caitlin Dowling, , GA
