Juanita Waters Walls
Juanita Waters Walls died in her sleep on July 21 after a long illness. She was 92. Juanita was the daughter of Kathleen Morgan Waters and Joseph Haynes Waters, Sr. She was one of seven children. Her family moved from their Screven County farm to Savannah during the Great Depression. She attended Georgia Southern College and received her bachelor's degree in education. After teaching first grade at Pennsylvania Avenue School for twenty years, she returned to college for further study and received a Master's degree in special education from the George Peabody College of Teachers in Nashville, Tennessee. She also completed post-graduate work at Duke University and The Ohio State University. Juanita was a pioneer in the development of special education in Savannah, both as a teacher in the classroom and as a mentor of teachers. She served as the Director of Special Education for the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools until her retirement. Juanita was a past member of Morningside Baptist Church where she served as the superintendent the Sunday school. She was also a past member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and Ardsley Park Baptist Church.
She and her husband, Allie Egan Walls, Sr. had three children: Allie Egan Walls, Jr., Robert Jackson Walls, and Christopher Edward Walls. She is predeceased by her husband and by her sons Allie and Robert. She is survived by her son Christopher, her sisters Dorothy Courington of Savannah and Nan Peacocke of Atlanta, and her brother Lamar Denton Waters of Augusta. Juanita is also survived by eleven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren who knew her as Ah-Mommy or Nana. Her friend Abby Jackson of Clarksville, GA deserves special mention as she was a daughter to Juanita in all but name. The family would like to thank Buckingham South and her care-givers for the wonderful care she received at the end of her life.
