Gerald W. Creel
Gerald Wayne Creel, 72, died September 24, 2013 at home under the care of Hospice Savannah, Inc. Diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1994, he fought a valiant and brave battle, often offering counsel to others new to the fight.
He was born April 3, 1941 in Corpus Christi, TX and had lived in Savannah since 1985. He was a graduate of Miller High School and Del Mar College in Corpus Christi. After graduating from North Texas State University in 1964 he was accepted into Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy in August 1964. He served as Engineering Officer aboard the USS Parrot MSC 197. After his discharge, he attended the University of Texas at Austin where he received an MBA in Marketing.
After graduation from UT, he worked at Armstrong Cork Company in Lancaster, PA in Marketing Research and later was transferred to Houston where he worked in sales for the Building Products division until he joined the sales force of the Cryovac Division of WR Grace Co. He moved to Savannah in 1985 after buying Savannah Industrial Supply Company and satisfying his long time dream of owning his own business. He had been a partner/owner of several businesses in Savannah including Savannah River Cruise Line The Magnolia, Drainage Specialties and Coastal Kayaks. Until his a retirement he was active in Rotary and had served as president of Rotary Club East. In 1995, he led a Group Study Exchange team to Indonesia. Gerald was a talented woodworker, a great cook and an avid reader. He was well versed in a multitude of subjects and it was almost impossible to find a word of which he did not know the meaning.
His father, Ira Dell Creel of Elgin, TX preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of forty-six years, Michele Peterman Creel of Savannah; his son and daughter-in-law Garner and Kellie Stapen Creel and the greatest love of his life, his granddaughter Anna who named him Dobbut. Gerald is also survived by his mother, Ruby Foehner Creel of Elgin, TX, his two sisters, Linda Creel Brinkley of Elgin, Judith Creel Trevathan Jim of San Antonio and seven nieces and nephews.
