Celebrating the life of

Richard Thomas Cowan, Jr.

December 22, 1928 - December 18, 2013

Richard Thomas Cowan, Jr.

Savannah- Richard Thomas Cowan, Jr., fondly known as "Doc", passed away peacefully the morning of December 18th, 2013 at Memorial University Medical Center after a short illness.

Born in Moultrie, Georgia, he was the son of the late Attorney, Richard Cowan and the late Inez Mingledorff Cowan. He graduated from Commercial High School and attended Armstrong University and also studied Law. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force and retired as an Instrumentation Specialist at American Cyanamide where he broke several records and was known as "the best Instrumentation Specialist around". If no one else could fix it "Penda" also a nickname could. He enjoyed meeting with his Wilmington Island friends at McDonalds every morning and spoke fondly and often about his many friends. He could be very vocal about his opinions, but was often told that he "had a heart of gold".

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Joseph Cowan, and his companion of many years, Bella Rayola.

Survivors include his three daughters, Pamela Yanner, Kimberly Mathews and her husband, Paul, Patricia Murphy and her husband, Robert; beloved grandchildren, Maria Cornett, Amber Yanner, and Ryan Murphy; siblings, Miriam Specht, Mary Alice Marshall, and Jack Cowan.

The funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, December 23, 2013 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Burial will follow in Bonaventure Cemetery.
