Alexander Lawrence Cann

SAVANNAH - Alexander Lawrence Cann, 79, passed away Friday, December 27, 2013 at his residence. He was born in Savannah, son of the late Samuel Adams Cann and Harriet Paine Lawrence Cann Huston. He graduated from Woodberry Forest Prep School in 1952 and then attended Duke University where he played first string on the freshman baseball team. He then transferred to the University of Georgia where he attended undergraduate business school and law school. He received a B.B.A. in 1956 and L.L.B. in 1958. Mr. Cann was vice president of Citi Group/Smith Barney and had been active in the securities industry since 1967. He was a member of Christ Church Episcopal, past president of the Savannah Chapter of the American Cancer Society, Savannah Golf Club, Savannah Tennis Association, Cotillion Club, and the Century Club. He was past vice president of the Telfair Arts Academy, former board member of the Oglethorpe Club. Mr. Cann served on the Board of Trustees for The Stewart Huston Charitable Trust, St. Joseph's and Candler Foundations, and the Victor B. Jenkins Memorial Boys Club. He was also past member of the American Bar Association and the State Bar Association of Georgia, and past #1 of Kappa Alpha Order at the University of Georgia 1957-1958.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia Hall Cann of Savannah; daughters Beverley Cann Reynolds L. Allan of Savannah; and Harriet Cann Connolly David of Dahlonega, GA; son, Alexander Lawrence Cann, Jr. Christine of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Alexander Lawrence Cann III and Mary Salisbury Cann of Atlanta, GA.
Graveside Funeral Service will be Monday, December 30, at 11:00 AM at Bonaventure Cemetery with Rev. Michael White and Rev. Billy Hester officiating.
