John Hill Harty

SAVANNAH - John Hill Harty, Sr. died January, 21, 2014, in Savannah, GA after complications from COPD and CHF.

"Hill" was born June 30, 1936. He was a native of Savannah and the youngest of five children of Anthony Harty and Jane Sloan Harty.

He is survived by his wife Carolyn Broadman Harty, his son, John Hill Harty, Jr., and daughter Siobhan Harty O'Leary, four grandchildren and his sister Jane Harty Abbott . He also leaves behind his loving step daughter and son-in-law, Diana and Bill Cummings and their children and grand children and step sons, Tom Baker and James and Jacquelyn Baker.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Joan Hill Harty, Anthony Harty, William Harty.

After serving in the Navy, Hill attended Loyola University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. He then returned to Savannah where he began his career with the Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Development Authority. His passion and dedication to the economic success in his home region was unwavering.

Hill had a true ability to build relationships instantly with anyone he crossed paths with; be it a server in a restaurant, or a senator, he valued the opportunity to learn their name, use it, and learn something interesting.

Further, being a member of the Hibernians, was an invaluable part of life that provided a backdrop for much enjoyment and lifelong friendships.

Being an avid dog lover, football fan, and chocolate lover, he found ample opportunities for simple pleasures.

Thank you to the medical teams at Candler Hospital, Select Care and Hospice Savannah for ensuring his comfort and happiness.

A visitation will be held at Fox and Weeks, Hodgson Chapel on Friday, January 24th from 5pm-7pm and a Memorial Mass will be at St. James Catholic Church, Saturday January 25 th at 11:00 am.

In lieu of flowers, the family of John Hill Harty, Sr, would appreciate your donations to the charities supported by the Hibernian Society of Savannah.
