Celebrating the life of

Nell McIntire Varnedoe

November 05, 1964 - January 30, 2014

Nell McIntire Varnedoe

SAVANNAH - Nell McIntire Varnedoe, 49, died at home January 30, 2014, surrounded by her family under the care of Hospice Savannah.
She was born November 5, 1964 in San Francisco, CA, graduated from Bishop O'Dowd High School in Oakland, CA, and moved to Savannah with her family in 1982.
Nell attended the Fashion Design and Merchandising School in San Francisco and later earned a degree in Children's Fashion Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. She was most recently working on a degree in teaching sign language.
Nell had a special gift with children, serving as a nanny both here in Savannah and in California, winning the hearts of the children and their families with her sweet and caring manner. Her gift was especially evident when caring for those children with disabilities and learning difficulties and this extended to her being a Foster Parent. Here in Savannah she worked as a teacher's aide at Maggie's Morning School and at White Bluff Elementary School. She was very creative and loved to design costumes and decorate for special occasions. She had a great sense of humor and a special skill for organizing events with her friends, making sure everyone had fun. Nell enjoyed music and loved to dance. She had a talent for illustrating and created her own original cartoon characters. Nell was also an excellent photographer with a natural talent for capturing the perfect moment with her subjects. She was a gentle, loving, sweet, caring, wonderful person who touched the lives of a great many people both young and old.
Surviving are her parents, Gordon and Catharine Varnedoe, her sister, Elise Varnedoe, her uncles and aunts, Otto and Comer Immel, Sam and Donnelly Varnedoe, Elise Bond Varnedoe, Elyn Zimmerman, and several cousins, as well as legions of children who will miss "Miss Nell".
A Memorial Service will be at Christ Church on Johnson Square on Tuesday, February 4, 2014, at 12:00 Noon, followed by a reception at the Church.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that remembrances be made to the Humane Society or your choice of charities in Nell's honor.

GUEST BOOK

Dear Mr. Mrs. Varnedoe and Elise, I knew Nell from Bishop O'Dowd and though it has been a long time ago, I will always remember her smiling and laughing in the halls or when we would visit during lunch. It's easy to see she was loved by so many people in her life and touched all of us in her own special way, that was her gift and purpose from God. May God carry you through this most difficult time of loss. My deepest sympathies, Kelli Stephens Hermanns BOD, Class of '82
