Celebrating the life of

Hector Ramon Perelez

December 14, 1952 - February 26, 2014

Hector Ramon Perelez

Hector Ramon Perelez, 61, returned home to the Lord on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He died peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving and devoted family. The world grew a little quieter Wednesday as heaven opened to embrace a brave husband, father, "Papa" and friend.

Hector is survived by his dear wife of 43 years, Agnes Ivette Perelez Aguirre "Betty", his son Hector R. Perelez, Jr. of Savannah and his daughters Neysa Perelez Accurso John of Crestview, Florida, and Elisse Perelez of Savannah. "Papa" will always be in the hearts of his precious grandson Jace Accurso, and granddaughters Jayden Accurso, Kirsten Miller, and Olivia Stegin.

Hector also leaves behind his devoted brother Ernesto L. Perelez Dara of Ozark, Alabama who frequently traveled to Savannah during Hector's illness. He is also survived by his dear mother Elisa Perelez Matos of Barranquitas, Puerto Rico and by Betty's beloved sisters and their husbands, many cousins, nieces and nephews, and countless friends who celebrate his life even while sadly saying goodbye.

Preceded in death by his father, Hector David Perelez and his younger brother Guillermo Perelez, Hector never forgot his strong Puerto Rican roots or the struggles he endured when first moving to Savannah, GA in 1983. He was proud of the achievements of his simple life filled with the riches many would envy in a loving and patient wife, devoted children, and grandchildren who meant everything to him.

Hector was a man who was always bigger than life and lived with a joke and smile even through the pain he experienced as he battled cancer. In the midst of his pain, Hector surrendered himself to the Lord and was received into the Catholic Church. Throughout his illness he was never seen without his crucifix and would often sling it over his shoulder and joke that he, like Jesus, was carrying his cross.

The family will greet friends at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Friday, February 28, 2014 with a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m.

The Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 1, 2014 at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, 11500 Middleground Road, followed immediately by burial in the Catholic Cemetery. Fr. Gabriel Cummings, Pastor of St. Frances Cabrini Church, will lead the Rite of Christian Burial. The family is grateful to Fr. Gabe for his kindness to the family as he help lead Hector to the Lord.

Hector will be remembered by those who love him not just for how he lived but how he chose to die. He enjoyed his last month's visiting family in Puerto Rico, traveling to Florida to watch his grandson Jace in football while cheering along with his granddaughter Jayden the cheerleader, celebrating his last birthday with his beloved friends and family at a huge celebration, and even dressing as Santa Claus for Christmas. Through his pain, Hector smiled, laughed and invited those who loved him to laugh along.

Hector found great humor and pride that the Hospice staff mistakenly thought he was a visitor rather than a patient as he went room to room talking to anyone who was alone. He left them all smiling… just as he has for all those who met this "life of the party." And as the heavenly choir raises their voices in song to welcome another child of God home, the tempo has already changed as Hector joins in with the loud beat of his conga drums.
