Celebrating the life of
Burl D. Claborn, Sr.
May 02, 1925 - April 19, 2014
Burl Denton Claborn
Burl D. Claborn passed away in Savannah, Georgia at Memorial University Medical Center early Saturday morning, April 19, 2014, after a short illness that interrupted an 88 year life of laughter, encouragement and giving that emanated from this loving father, veteran and long-time Savannah businessman. He was born in Albany, Kentucky on May 2, 1925. Burl was a highly decorated Army retired Sergeant First Class, honored and visited in his home by former field commanders and generals alike for the contributions he had made to the military units to which he was assigned and the personal lives of those he cheerfully and honorably served in and out of the Army. He was also a Kentucky Colonel, an honor bestowed on him by the Governor of Kentucky.
Older Savannah natives may still smile remembering him during the times when Tanner's Hot Dog and Fruit Drink counter buzzed with the business of downtown shoppers and business people. Other folks recall the Kessler's Restaurant at the State Farmer's Market serving up Turkey and dressing for working people who yearned for a delicious home cooked meal. Burl and Anna Claborn labored happily among their customers making all that happen for the people of Savannah and Garden City. At nearly 89, He cooked his last full family meal with all the "fixins" only a week or so before his last illness.
Burl tended to his life-time love of 61 years, Anna Jewel Cowan through the last ten years of her struggle with multiple strokes and who preceded him in death on August 16, 2010. As in each of his endeavors, he performed this work of love with passion, with a plan that he worked each and every day and night. He never complained. He never criticized.
Surviving members of his family include his devoted son, Burl D. "Buddy" Claborn, Jr. and his wife Lindy, daughter, Dorothy Lee Doll, and her husband, Henry, a son, Elmer H. "Pete" Young and his wife, Carol, all of whom he loved and cared for as his own since their early childhood. He left many grandchildren: Kimberly Batts, Deanna Douglas, Denny Claborn, David Glisson, Henry Doll, Jr., Jane Beebe, Kathi Hodgins, Rebecca Suppes, Christopher Young, Marshall Young, Theresa Young, John Young deceased Kristi Smith, Angie Byrd and Mike McCorkle. He took great delight in each of these and more than a score of great-grandchildren.
His deep Kentucky roots connected him to a father, Joe Kelly Claborn, mother, Emma Taylor Claborn; brothers, Eugene Claborn, Creed Claborn, AC Claborn, Robert Claborn, JB Claborn; sisters, Josephine Dyer, and Imogene Owens. Their wives and husbands, his numerous nieces and nephews were always cherished.
Burl was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church of Savannah, Savannah Elks Club and the Savannah Exchange Club.
Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Immanuel Baptist Church, with The Rev. Steve Batts officiating.
Burial will be in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Immanuel Baptist Church, or the charity of your choice.

My husband was blessed by being the first one of us to meet 'Mr. Burl'. Then I had the great honor to get to know and love this precious man who was soft, kind, sweet, fun-loving and who had an adorable smile. It didn't take me very long to see why his family adored him so. I never heard him say an unkind word about anyone. To go past his seat in the Oglethorpe Mall is going to be hard for us as he won't be sitting there anymore ... and there will be many who work in the Mall who will miss him as he loved to 'entertain them' and put a smile on their faces. Bobby and I will miss our trips with him and it just won't be the same without him. God decided it was time for Mr. Burl to go to his heavenly home. We love you Mr. Burl and will miss you greatly! Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family during their time of loss. Love, Bobby and Janet Jeter

Dear Buddy and Lindy and family, It was an honor to know Papa. He was such a happy, cheerful man who loved and lived life to its fullest. I remember fondly all the home-cooked meals he made for his family and their friends at his home. How blessed I was to be included as a part of the family. Papa always danced into the room with a big smile on this face. His perpetual good mood was infectious! I hope it is some comfort to you that his health was so good until this recent decline. He didn't have to endure a long illness that would ravage his body and deteriorate his quality of life. Rest in peace, Burl. We will miss you. We grieve your loss from us but rejoice in your reunion with your beloved wife, Anna, and your Savior, Jesus Christ. My love and deepest condolences to the entire family. Sydney
- Sydney Wade, Williamsport, PA
My absolute fondest memories of childhood center around Papa’s house with what always seemed like mountains of boiled shrimp, Tanner’s hot dogs and endless pies. Papa was at the center of the show – dancing in the kitchen and singing a little ditty that begged you to laugh. Those were days full of great southern cooking, playing with cousins down by the creek and sitting around the carport listening to Papa, Grannie and the rest of the adults tell story after story that usually led to belly laughs for all – a good day’s entertainment long before the Internet, iPads and mobile phones could so easily distract. My heart aches that I won’t be able to reminisce with him about those “good ol’ days” or hear him call me “Becky Lee from Tennessee” again. I miss him already but am forever grateful for his loving and joyful presence in my life. Les, Brockton and I send our love to the entire family. Rest in Peace, Papa.

I will always remember Uncle Burl as a kind and gentle man who loved to cook, laugh, and live life to it's fullest. He always loved to 'come home to Kentucky' whenever he could and we always enjoyed seeing him and spending time with him. And, when we visited with him in Savannah, you couldn't have asked for a better host and we were definitely well fed. We will miss you and your big smiles Uncle Burl. Dear Buddy, Lindy and Family: What a pleasure it was to have known Papa. He was such a kind, gentle man with such a happy , sweet sprit about him. I loved to see his smiling face coming into the office daily. He would usually sing us a little song or recite a verse of a song to put a smile on all of our faces. I loved Papa as I love all of you. Not everyone is blessed enough that their work family is like real family. So sorry for your loss and he will truly be missed.

Sydney
