Celebrating the life of
Louise "Lou" Williams Harrison
July 01, 1915 - May 09, 2014
Tybee Island, GA- Louise Williams Harrison died Friday, May 9, 2014 at the age of 98. She was the daughter of Louise Curry Williams and Frederick Winchester Williams. Lou was born in Macon, Georgia on July 1, 1915.
She was married to John "Cotton" Harrison in 1934. Together they established and ran Cotton Harrison's Camp for twenty-five years until his death in 1969. Lou also served as the school secretary for several schools in the Bibb County School System, including seven years at Mark Smith High School. She resigned from that position in order to begin the next phase of her life, which was to include a great love of travel and adventure.
That led her to Ajijic, Jalisco, a small village in Mexico. She lived in Ajijic for 40 years, until February, 2011. She became fluent in Spanish and was very active in the community, especially in working with disadvantaged children. She was an active member of St. Andrews Anglican Church, serving on the vestry and as Senior Warden.
In 2011 Lou moved to Tybee Island, GA to live with her daughter Linda Cox, in order to be closer to her children and grandchildren. At the time of her death she was a member of All Saints' Episcopal Church on Tybee Island.
She is predeceased by her husband Cotton and her second husband Frank G. Millington of Ajijic, Jalisco. She is also predeceased by her son John Davis Harrison, Jr. She is survived by her children, Rick Harrison and his wife Marion; Linda Cox and her husband Chuck Utley; and Curry Edwards and her husband Lloyd. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Rick and Mandy Harrison; Brig, Andy, and Ben Tison; Bill Verner, and Curry Vinci. She had fourteen great-grandchildren.
Lou's family and all who knew and loved her will always be grateful for what they learned from her about loving life and living it with courage, joy, and a sense of adventure. A celebration of her life will be held at All Saints' Episcopal Church on Tybee Island on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at 2:00 p.m.
The family would like to express their deep gratitude to Hospice Savannah, especially Liz Mahr and Pat McPhatter for their loving presence and assistance to both Lou and to her family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Hospice Savannah, Inc., PO Box 13190, Savannah, GA 31416 or All Saints' Episcopal Church, PO Box 727, Tybee Island, GA 31328.
I did not know Ms. Harrison, but, know her legacy though the offspring she left behind. What a wonderful full life and influence she made on women. Rest in peace.

My deepest sympathy to the Harrison family for the loss of your dear loved one. During this most difficult time, may your hearts be comforted by Jehovah God's promise to 'swallow up death forever and to wipe away the tears from all faces.' Isaiah 25:8

Louise Harrison was a special friend to most everyone who knew her. As I reflect on my role as camper & counselor at Cotton Harrison's Camp I rejoice in the friendships that were made during those summer months. Cotton & Louise & all of the Harrison family made camp a special place that impacted everyone in a positive way. I continue to tell others who did not know about the camp so many stories that bring comfort and laughter to all - walking to the country store, horse trails after supper, the square dance, skit night, and Saturday matinee at the Capitol Theatre for a 'True Grit' style movie are just a few memories that everyone at camp will remember. To Linda, Rick & Curry, your mother will always be special to so many outside of your family - she will continue in our memories forever.
- Jag Gholson, Athens, GA
Rick, Linda And Curry, I was deeply saddened to learn of your mothers passing. Devereaux, Cathy and I will always treasure our memories of being at camp with y'all and your father and mother and ''Little John”. We were all so lucky to have had her as part of our lives. I just know she's now enjoying some Chief Kickapoo stew along with one of Mattie's biscuits and a cup of iced tea.

Curry & family, I don't have to tell you how I felt about my second Mama. My memories of her and Cotton and all of you are filled with nothing but joy. I hope she went peacefully, and am not saddened because I'll always have those wonderful memories. My time at the Camp, both as a camper & counselor, remain some of the fondest of my life. God bless her and all of you.

Linda and family: Your mother was so wonderful to me at camp. I spent 6 glorious summers there and still carry the BEST memories: lining up for alcohol in our ears after swimming, picking blackberries, long walks, country store, square dances, and Chief Kickapoo Stew. She will live on forever in the hearts of all the campers whose lives she touched!

- John Wadley, macon, GA
Condolences to the Harrison family. I was blessed to be a camper for two years, and then hired by Mrs. Harrison to be a counselor 1968-75. My camp experience was instrumental in my decision to subspecialize in working with children and adolescents within my medical practice of psychiatry. Her incredible legacy lives on.

Dear Rick, Linda and Curry and families: I feel so fortunate to have crossed paths with Louise, who taught, guided and supported me and will always be remembered with gratitude. I also remember with fondness her visiting me in Eugene, Oregon, oh so far from home. My years as camper and counselor as many as were allowed! were the best experiences one could ever dream of having and have influenced my life in profound ways. I am grateful to you all and send sincere wishes for a graceful transition to life without Lou. Love, Cleveland

Dear Harrison family, I was saddened to read of your mother's death in today's paper. I had so many fond memories of her at Cotton Harrison's Camp. From treating skinned knees, hurt feelings, teaching swimming lessons to being a gracious hostess, she was the heart and sould of the camp. Those wonderful memories are such an important part of my childhood. How appropriate the obituary is in the paper on mother's day as she was a mother to so many. I know you will miss her as we all will. Thank you for sharing her with us all. Love, Denny and Sambo Jones
- Denny O'Callaghan Jones, Macon, GA
