Marie Lyons Crider

Marie Lyons Crider, age 89 years, died Sunday, May 25, 2014, after a brief illness.

She was born in Savannah, Georgia to the late John J. Lyons and Stella Hohenstein Lyons. Marie graduated from St. Vincent's Academy, and then earned an Associate degree in Liberal Arts 1942 from what was then known as Armstrong Junior College. She graduated magna cum laude from Vanderbilt University, where she earned a BA in English. Thirty years later, she earned her Masters Degree in Education from Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, Georgia.

She married Fretwell Goer Crider at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist on December 27, 1947. Their marriage took her to Durham, North Carolina, and Arlington, Texas before she returned to Savannah where she embarked on a career in teaching.

Marie Crider was an educator in Georgia for two decades. She taught fifth graders at Blessed Sacrament School Savannah, eighth graders at Sacred Heart School Savannah and ninth grade English at Bleckley County High School Cochran.

After retiring from teaching high school, she moved to Dublin, Georgia before returning to Savannah for the last time. Marie and her husband built a home at Tybee Island where she could often be found, sitting on the porch, reading, or sharing stories with family and friends.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Fretwell G. Crider, and four children: Fretwell Goer Crider, Jr. Sandy and Robert Lyons Crider Meg of Savannah; Catherine Crider Hall Joe of Lilburn, Georgia, and Joseph Doyle Crider Karen of Warner Robins, Georgia; ten grandchildren Matthew Crider, Wiley Crider, Brian Crider, Joey Hall, Andrew Crider, Katie Crider, Lane Hall, Caroline Crider, John Hall, and Bobby Crider. She has numerous nieces and nephews from Savannah to Louisiana, including her sister-in-law, Kay Bandi Lyons of New Orleans. Marie was preceded in death by her beloved aunt, Mary Hohenstein and brothers, John and Charles Lyons.

Marie was a devout Catholic whose faith inspired her family throughout the years. Her warm sense of humor and generous heart will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be Wednesday, May 28 from 5 until 7 PM with a Rosary at 6 PM at Hodgson Chapel, Fox and Weeks. The funeral Mass will be Thursday, May 29 at 11:00 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, officiated by her nephew, Rev. John J. Lyons. Burial will follow at Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah.
