Richard Barry McElveen

Richmond Hill- Richard Barry McEleveen, 70, passed away Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at Hospice House.

He was born in Savannah, Ga on December 16, 1943 to Mary & Cluese McElveen and graduated from H.V. Jenkins High School, Class of 1962. After graduation, he was employed with Laundry & Dairy Supply Co. (a dry- cleaning supply business). In 1982 he purchased the business and changed the name to Savannah Chemicals, Inc. He retired in 1998.

In April 1999, he received his license to sell Real Estate and joined the firm of Coldwell Banker/Garvin Realtors. In 2000 he received the “Rookie of the Year Award” for outstanding achievement, followed by the “Third Place Sales Award”, “Coldwell Banker Million Dollar Club Award”, and Savannah Board of Realtors, “Million Dollar Club Award”. He was an active member of the Savannah Board of Realtors and served on the Forms Committee and the Political Action Committee for the board.

Barry served on the Board of Directors of South Eastern Fabrication Association (a trade association serving the drycleaning industry in the South East), for fourteen years, and became the Executive Director in 2001. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Georgia Drycleaning Council and was past president of the Savannah Area Fabricare Association.

He was appointed by Lynn Westmoreland to the “Compliance Advisory Panel” of the Georgia Small Business Assistance Program.

His memberships included the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, Savannah Chamber of Commerce, the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce, Georgia Society of Association Executives, the American Society of Association Executives, Past Chairman of the Coastal Bryan Development Authority, Past Vice Chairman of the Bryan County Planning and Zoning and a member of the Bryan County Republican Party where he served as Treasurer.

He was an active member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church, the Savannah Council #631 of the Knight of Columbus, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee and past President and Charter member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick. He enjoyed fishing, boating, and time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Margie Broyles Bagley of Richmond Hill; step-children, John Nation, Jr. (Frances) of Sterling, VA, Lee AnneBagley Walsh (Kevin) of Macon, GA, Paige Bagley Jackson (Dr. Rollin B.) of Richmond Hill; brothers, Don McElveen (Carolyn Luck) and James McElveen (Clarissa), both of Savannah; sister, Andrea Richardson of Savannah; six grandchildren, Victoria Nation and John Nation, both of Sterling, VA, Will McGrath of Richmond Hill, Matthew Walsh, Mary Katherine Walsh, both of Macon, and Jacob Jackson of Richmond Hill; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 20, 2014 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel, followed by a graveside service at 11:30 a.m. at the Catholic Cemetery.
