SAVANNAH - L. Sanders Corbit, age 70, died at Hospice House Savannah on September 20, 2014. He passed away after a valiant battle with ALS.
Born August 14, 1944 in Nashville, Tennessee, to Lewis and Ione Corbit, he attended Georgia Military Academy and Vanderbilt University. He grew up in Stratford, CT and played on numerous championship baseball teams. Sanders played college baseball at Vanderbilt and went on to get drafted by the Boston Red Sox Triple-A team. In 1971, he stepped off the mound for an inning to marry the love of his life, Susan Fielder Corbit.
Susan and Sanders started out in Darien, CT and later moved to Manchester-by-the -Sea, MA. They spent 23 years on Sunset Hill, where they raised their two children, Holly and Grant. Sanders had a successful career in sales and marketing and founded his own environmental consulting company before retiring to The Landings in 2001.
In his retirement, Sanders taught English at Savannah Technical College and instructed senior fitness classes at the JEA, Generation One and The Marshes. With his love for tennis and between-match camaraderie , he created what officially became known as " The Tuesday- Thursday Sanders Corbit Open Tennis."
Sanders will be especially remembered for his ability to relate to people of all ages and his willingness to mentor and encourage young people who looked to him for guidance and wisdom.
Sanders is survived by his wife, Susan J. Corbit, of Savannah, GA, his children , Grant Corbit of West Hartford, CT and daughter, Holly Falzarano (Rene) , his grandchildren, Evander and Ela Falzarano of Charlotte, NC and his brother-in-law, Wayne Fielder (Rose), of Coatesville, PA.
A gathering will be held at The Plantation Club at The Landings on Saturday, September 27th, 2014 from 1:00-3:00pm.
Memorial contributions are welcome at the JEA of Savannah and the ALS Foundation of Georgia.
The family extends special thanks to Sanders' many friends who were with him throughout his heroic fight with ALS and to Kathy Lewis of Hospice Savannah.

Dear Susan, Sanders always lived large. He attracted a large following and loved to talk and listen. The 17th C. philosopher Spinoza wrote that everything is part of God and nothing is not part of God. Some have more god spark than others and Sanders shone bright. I believe he continues to shine.
