Celebrating the life of

Elizabeth Crumbley "Betty" Waldrop

June 16, 1921 - October 23, 2014

We have all been richer and blessed from having known and loved her.

Elizabeth Crumbley

Elizabeth (Betty) Crumbley Waldrop

Died on October 23, 2014 after a short illness at Hospice Savannah surrounded by her loving family.

She was the daughter of Jesse Charles Crumbley Sr. and Maude Mallard Crumbley. She was born in Savannah, Ga on June 16, 1921 and attended Waters Avenue School, 35th Street Junior High and Savannah High School and graduated in 1940 from Armstrong Junior College. At the University of Georgia she was member of the honor societies Phi Upsilon Omicron and Phi Kappa Phi and graduated in 1942 with a degree in Home Economics. She taught at Savannah High School during World War II.

On January 1, 1943, she married the love of her life Charles M. Waldrop Jr. (Charlie). Following the war, they moved to Athens, Georgia where Charlie earned a degree in Pharmacy and she earned a Master’s degree in Home Economics from the University of Georgia. They moved back to Savannah where they raised four lively children. They managed and worked in the family business, Crumbley’s Pharmacy, for over 50 years. Betty was very active in local and state women’s auxiliaries of the pharmacy association and many other worthwhile organizations.

She was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, worked with and directed the youth department, and was a member of the Classics and the Friendship Class.

Her faith in God was a primary factor in her life. When she spoke a simple prayer it was profound and memorable. She was an accomplished musician and homemaker. Her home was a haven for many. Words cannot describe how loving and kind she was. All who crossed her threshold received a warm welcome and were treated as family. She reached her life’s goal, living a long and useful life and creating a happy Christian home for her family. We have all been richer and blessed from having known and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her brothers Jesse Charles Crumbley Jr. and Thomas Carlton Crumbley, sister-in-law Helen Boothe Crumbley, son Thomas Jesse (Jake) Waldrop and grandson Daniel Peter Harris.

Surviving are Charles Waldrop, her husband of 71 wonderful years; and three children, Lynn W. Smithberg (Roy), Elizabeth W. Harris (Peter), Jim Waldrop (Cynthia), and daughter-in law Vivian Waldrop, three grandchildren: Jessica Stepaniak (Alan), Graham Waldrop, and Jess Waldrop (Kelli), sister-in-law Faye Crumbley of Savannah, cousin Jacolyn Jones, nieces and nephews Jess (Laura) Crumbley, Elizabeth Boothe Crumbley, Tom (Tiana) Crumbley and their children Riley, Jayla, and Olivia, Dr. Jennifer Crumbley Dodson (Stan) their children John and Jane, Boothe (Molly) Crumbley and Margaret (Keith) Cable and their children, Aidan and Morigan.

Her family extends their sincere thanks to all who were involved in her care: the staff at St. Joseph’s and Candler Hospitals, Home Instead, Hospice Savannah, her physicians and their staff, and the entire staff at Buckingham South.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 26, at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel. A memorial service will be held on Monday, October 27 at 10:30 a.m. Hodgson Chapel. The internment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests remembrances to First Baptist Church of Savannah, P.O. Box 9551, Savannah, GA 31412 or to Hospice Savannah, 1352 Eisenhower Drive, Savannah, GA 31406.

Dear friends, Words cannot express what growing up on 31st St. with your family meant to me. Your Mom was such an example of caring and love to all who knew her. We had great times and I know she will be missed. One day we will all have a reunion in glory with our Loving Lord and those who have gone on before us. You all are in our prayers. Celebrate her life and know that she has left behind wonderful memories for all who loved her.
