Rudolph Herbert Brushwood, 93, of Simsbury, husband of the late Eleanor (Hutchinson) Brushwood, died Saturday, August 9, 2014 at McLean in Simsbury. He was born March 5, 1921 in Savannah, GA, son of the late William Oscar and Alice (Phillips) Brushwood. Rudy was a mechanical engineering graduate of Georgia Institute of Technology and a graduate of the John Marshall School of Law, both in Atlanta, GA. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Navy in underwater detonation in the Pacific Theater. He was among the first ashore in three invasions, including Iwo Jima, and was part of the occupying forces in Japan. Mr. Brushwood was employed by the Hartford Insurance Group for 33 years prior to his retirement, serving on numerous industry organizations and committees. Following his retirement, he worked with the law firm of Tyler Cooper and Alcorn of Hartford for two years. He was a member of Asylum Hill Congregational Church, the Old Guard, and the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity at Georgia Tech. Rudolph was a former member of the Avon Country Club and Fernleigh Lawn Bowling Club. He did volunteer work with the Loaves and Fishes Ministries, the Hartford Rehabilitation Center, and at McLean. Rudy also enjoyed gardening and flowers. A devoted husband, loving father and adoring grandfather, he lived with a strong sense of faith and made friends wherever he walked. He was a life humbly and generously spent.
He is survived by his daughter, Eleanor Brushwood Williamson and her husband Robert W. Williamson of Key Largo, FL, his grandchildren, Thomas W. Williamson of Washington, DC, Dr. Elizabeth W. Dann and her husband Luke Dann of Hanover, NH and Todd Williamson of Los Angeles, CA, and three great grandchildren, Gretchen, Courtney and Carly Dann of Hanover, NH. He was the last survivor of his siblings and many first cousins. At Rudy's request, there are no calling hours and a private burial service will be held in Savannah.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 24, 2014 in Bonaventure Cemetery.
