Celebrating the life of

Janie Lois Hammock

January 23, 1915 - October 28, 2014

Janie Lois Hammock

Savannah- Janie Lois Hammock went to be with Jesus today October 28, 2014. What a wonderful reunion it must have been when her husband of 66 years, her son, parents and 8 siblings welcomed her.

Lois was born in Tattnall County in 1915 to Columbia Ann and Rufus B. Griffin.

Her family moved to West Palm Beach, Florida where they had an orange grove and ran a boarding house for the workers.

Although she was only 12 she learned to cook for the boarders and large family.

This experience was helpful when she became a dietician at Memorial Hospital and Clark Pavilion.

Her family moved back to Savannah in 1929.

She married Myrtis Hammock on Christmas Day 1935 and they raised two children Myrtice Lavonne (Newton) and Rufus Ola (Henry) deceased.

Other survivors are Edwin Griffin (Sally), Lanel Dunn (Roy), 7 grandsons, 8 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was pre-deceased by siblings Otis Griffin (Elizabeth), R. B. Griffin (Pat), Arnold Griffin (Darlene), Edna Griffin (infant), Doris Davis (Thurman), Minnie Polk (Merele), Laila Hammock (Everidge), Myrtle Avant (Mack).

She was an active member of Central church of Christ, loved to greet visitors, send cards and make telephone calls to the sick.

She was a surrogate mother to many children, bringing them into her home, sometimes for years. She never turned anyone away who needed a place to stay, a meal or somebody to talk to.

Although she never had many possessions she always shared what she had.

She only had the opportunity to attend school, (Chatham Jr. High) thru the 9th grade, but taught many to cook, sew, embroidery and love the Lord.

She loved everybody and they loved her. She was truly a good example to future generations.

The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 31, 2014 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park.

Pallbearers: Gary McLeod, Chris McLeod, Dennis Hammock, Gordon Hammock, Robert Lindsay, Larry Smith.

Remembrances may be made to Raintree Village Children’s Home, 3757 Johnston Rd., Valdosta, GA 31601.

What a blessing to have lived for such a long time and exceeded human expectation. However, God purposed that man should live forever, will soon be realized in the near future. John 11:25 our Lord and savior Jesus Christ says.." I am the resurrection and the life, he that exercises faith in me, even though he dies, will come to like( New World Translation). My your family find hope in those words.

Aunt Lois was and always will be my role model my inspiration. She gave me emotional support growing up and unconditional love she made me feel as if I mattered when things were confusing. she taught me to cook and she taught me to care about other people and family. Aunt Lois will always hold a very special place in my heart .I am thankful she is now comfortable and at peace and with Jesus.

She blessed many people. More than she will ever know. I can picture her sweet smile waving from her porch in Heaven now. Although our bodies are 1000 miles apart, our hearts are with you. I hold the memories dear and look forward to eating and visiting around her kitchen table in Heaven. And oh how I look forward to her meeting Josh and our precious baby one day. I love all of you dearly!

I have so many wonderful memories growing up with you as my grandmother. I could never wait until it was my turn to spend the night and have my special time with you. I will never forget the day I was walking home from school in the cold and ran into you at the old Dairy Queen and you buying me an ice cream cone. All the more a great memory because you remembered it even in your later years. love you grandma!
