Celebrating the life of

Harriet Davis Killorin

Harriet Davis Killorin

Tybee Island - Harriet Graham Davis Killorin, ninety-three, died at home on January 16th after a long illness in the care of Hospice Savannah. The daughter of Harriet Christie and Arthur Searing Davis, she is survived by Joseph Killorin, her husband of sixty-four years, their daughters--Diana, Elizabeth, and Clare, her brothers-in-law George Killorin and Alex Moseley Smith, sisters in law Isabelle Powers Killorin and Virginia Ware Killorin, her friend Carol Taylor, and many loving cousins, nephews, and nieces.

Harriet’s happy career centered on her family, but after Armstrong College and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Harriet was, over the years: a reporter for the Savannah Morning News and Evening Press; a student at the New York School of Social Work; a teacher at Armstrong College and Jenkins High School; a columnist for the Georgia Gazette; an assistant administrator of the Ossabaw Island Writer’s Project; and a member of the board (recognized for her long, important service) at Greenbriar Children’s Center. At home, she was an insatiable reader, a writer of poetry and stories, and a joy to talk with.

Harriet was a deeply informed defender of humanitarian and liberal causes. Local groups turned to her, for instance, to debate publicly Sheriff Bill Harris on the activities of Senator Joe McCarthy. As a southerner born and bred, she was first in the Civil Rights sit-ins.

Harriet’s family is deeply grateful for the long and dedicated care of Hospice RN Liz Maher, CNA Patricia McPhatter, and devoted care-giver, Mrs. Sammie Williams.

So sorry to hear about Harriet. She was blessed having her loving husband, Joe, and daughters Diana, Liz and Clare to care for her, at home, during her illness. I will keep you all in my prayers. Your neighbor..

I have so many memories of those rides on the back of the car with Clare, Becky and my sister Margaret down the (then) dirt road to the Killorin house on Tybee. Every time I cross the last bridge to visit my Mom on Tybee, I think of those days and all of the Killorins. Sincere condolences on my part to you all. Harriet will always be remembered. Ceci

Harriet was a great lady here. I know she'll be a great lady in her new life there. But I know how you miss her in your own lives here. Here and there are one world. Be happy for her. I am happy to have known her even briefly.

- Claudette Warlick, Savannah, Georgia

Our Mothers, born in 1921, died at 93 were so alike and so loved by their children. I will cherish my limited memories of Harriet (wonderful and witty conversations at the dinner table) and will manufacture meetings of our Mothers in my mind... may their souls be multiplied and recycled throughout humanity. My love to you all: Diana, Liz, Clare and Joe
