Artist and Author

William McComb Weyman

William McComb Weyman, 75, passed away Friday, March 13, 2015. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia, son of Samuel M. and Harriet Campbell Weyman. Mr. Weyman received a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from The University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee in 1963. He lived in Savannah for a short time in the early eighties, but spent most of his life in Cezanne country, in and around Aix-en-Provence, France. In 1972 with Marchutz and artist friend Sam Bjorklund, he co-founded the Marchutz School in Aix which continues to this day. After fourteen years in the southwest of France, and a brief period in Costa Rica, he and family moved permanently to Savannah. He and his wife Jacqueline Weyman established the Daedalus Gallery. His works are represented in collections in France, Monaco, Germany, England and in the United States. He was a member of St. John’s Church and a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.

Surviving are his wife Jacqueline Carcagno Weyman of Savannah; daughters Deborah, Sarah and Laura Weyman; siblings Harriet (Richard) Sheppard, Maury (George) Moody, Sam Weyman; three grandchildren, cousins Fontaine Draper, Helen Durant, Margaret Hiers and Ann Brownlow.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 21, 2015 at St. John’s Church. Please join the family for a reception in the Green Meldrim House immediately following the service.

GUEST BOOK

We have already written Jacqueline, but we wanted to say, briefly and belatedly, that Billy was a great friend, a great painter, and a great human being. He taught us so much about "organic unity" and the underrated aesthetic of Rouault, Cézanne, Leo Marchutz and many others. We shared a common commitment to the Christian worldview, and a common love for the art forms that are shaped by it. We are sad for his family and friends. His departure leaves an enormous empty place. But the memory of him and his extraordinary paintings, as well as the deeply-inspiring "Leo & I" will continue to nurture our spirits. May the God of all comfort comfort you greatly. Love, Bill and Barbara

Dear Jacqueline, Carolyn and I are so sorry to hear about your loss. When we were in France together in 2012, you always spoke so lovingly of him. We feel honored to have visited his school and learn about the amazing legacy he left...and, of course, the life and paintings of Cezanne. William's paintings will live on forever along with the wonderful memories on which you will always have to reflect.

We are deeply saddened to learn of Billy's passing. We were students and then friends of Billy's (and Sam's) first as IAU students in 1969-70 and later again in 1972 and 1986 when we returned to Aix to live. He was a wonderful artist and even better teacher. The many hours we spent discussing art and art history and the problematic nature of the 20th century influenced us (and several others from that cohort) for the rest of our lives. Several of us had a mini-IAU reunion in Vail last summer and discussed our times with Billy at length and with great affection. He made the world a better place for us and many other students. We will miss him, but never forget him.

Although we hadn't been in touch for years, I was so saddened to learn of Billy's death though Liz and Sam. He was a wonderful painter, and a giving teacher and friend. Jacqueline, I am thinking of you and your family and sending love as you celebrate Billy's remarkable life. In my eyes,Billy is 21. That was how old he was when we met in Aix. He was "the cute one"! We were painters together with Professor Marchutz. After I broke my leg, I just about did not return to school. But, on his scooter, he took me into town when necessary, my crutches and leg cast hanging off to the side. Billy organized an art exhibit and the two of us exhibited our paintings toward the end of our school year. Quite unexpectedly, my name is mentioned a few times in his book on Aix. We spoke of this and, thru emails, kept in touch. I am so very saddened by his passing. I so enjoyed getting visuals of his paintings and Jacquelines. They were so joyful! He has left a great legacy in his paintings and in the school that he helped create. And of course, in his children! R.I.P. dear Billy!

Dear Jacqueline, Deborah, and Sarah, Sam emailed me the news about Billy's death. You are all in my prayers. I'm so sorry. I don't think you would remember me, Deborah and Sarah, but I was a close friend of Billy's in France and in Savannah when you were little. I used to babysit you a lot. You're father was so special to me. I loved him as a person, and he was the best mentor and teacher I ever had. My condolences to you all. a

Dear Jacqueline, I just heard of Billy's death from my friend Rick Shrader in Kansas. I am so sad and caught off guard by this. I was near to Savannah a week ago and even thought of taking a detour to see you, but pressed on with my trip north. I should have made a plan to see you in advance. Billy was a dear man, fine painter, devoted scholar and a great friend to me. As a student, he and Leo initiated my journey as a painter and I am forever indebted to his caring spirit and guidance. I always expected another meeting with you both and I'm so sorry that this won't be possible now. I hope that you are doing ok with love and support of innumerable friends. All our love to you.
