William Cann Seaman

March 30, 1926 - April 01, 2015

William Cann Seaman

Savannah - William Cann Seaman, 89, passed away on April 1 from complications related to Alzheimer's disease. Bill was born March 30, 1926 in Savannah, GA to Bleecker and Florence Cann Seaman.  He graduated from Woodberry Forest School where he developed many friendships and excelled as part of the football and baseball teams.  He attended the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.  Bill started Chapel Hill in 1944 in the Navy Preflight School and was preceded in the Navy by his father and brother.

On September 3, 1959 Bill married Joan Richards, a graduate of Duke University, and despite their rival schools, they enjoyed 55 happy years of marriage.  The Seamans lived in northern Westchester County, New York, where they raised their children.  They moved to The Landings on Skidaway Island, GA in 1985 prior to Bill's retirement.

Following college, Bill and two friends set out for Alaska where he worked as a cook in a construction camp for the Al-Can highway.  After a brief stint with American Airlines, Bill began his 40 year career in television and advertising.  He started as a page with the Dumont Television Network quickly rising to become a Director, before moving to ABC Sports where he continued in production for seven years.  In 1963, he started a 25 year career with the William Esty Company, ultimately becoming Executive Vice President of Marketing and Television.  Before his retirement in 1990 he spent three years as Director of Marketing and Television for World Championship Tennis.  Through both work and in his personal life, Bill enjoyed playing and watching sports. His ultimate passion was the New York Football Giants.  A season ticket holder since 1955, his passions ran deep; and emotions rose and fell with each Giants victory and defeat.

He was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Savannah, The Oglethorpe Club, The Waccabuc Country Club, and The Landings Club, the latter two for which he served as a Board member.  Bill volunteered at the VA Hospital in Savannah and served on The Historic Savannah Foundation.

He is preceded in death by his brother Bleecker Seaman Jr., and his sister Ann Paxton.  He is survived by his wife Joan; daughter Leslie Gauff and husband Bruce Bell of Stowe, VT; daughter Ann and husband Andrew Rogerson of Manhattan Beach, CA; and son Bleecker and  wife Merrie Mac of Pacific Palisades, CA; and five grandchildren: Drew and Katharine Rogerson and Adelaide, Emma and Elizabeth Seaman.

A memorial service will be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church at The Landings, Thursday, April 9, 2015, at 11 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center, Attention: Voluntary Service, 109 Bee St., Charleston, SC 29401.

Dear Joan and family, We are of course thinking of you. Bill was so wonderful to Lee when he could no longer drive - making sure he got to their regular bridge games. Joan was an exceptionally devoted wife and caregiver. We are sad for your loss, but hope you find peace at the same time. Fondly, The Howards
