Celebrating the life of

Edward C. Mangiero

January 07, 1930 - April 18, 2015

Edward C. Mangiero

Savannah- Edward C. (“Ed”) Mangiero, age 85, died Saturday, April 18, 2015, at Candler Hospital with his family at his side. Ed was born in 1930 in Staten Island, New York. He was predeceased by his parents, several sisters and brothers, and by his youngest daughter, Susan. He served in the United States Army and fought in the Korean War from 1947-1951. He then joined the New York Police Department from which he retired. After his retirement from the NYPD, he enjoyed many other careers, almost all engaging his talents in carpentry, roofing, screening, machine shop work and woodworking, which he enjoyed so much that it became his favorite hobby. Ed had a true love of children and others who needed a little extra help; he most enjoyed woodworking projects that would be used by children. His child-sized wooden Adirondack chairs were favorite items – and he donated many to the public library, elementary schools, Ronald McDonald house, St. Mary’s home and numerous other charitable organizations.

Ed was a communicant of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church. He was a long time, active member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Peter’s Men’s Club, and he spent hours volunteering at school and church events. He was a voracious reader, especially of non-fiction, and he had a remarkable depth of knowledge concerning the history of World War II. Ed had a real passion for people – he never met a stranger. He seemed to consider it his life purpose to befriend anyone he met, and he enriched the lives of almost anyone who crossed his path.

Ed is survived by his wife of 61 years, Noreen. He also leaves behind a sister, Concetta Gilroy; two daughters, Gail Barndollar (Mike), and Carol Mangiero, both of Savannah, and a son , Edward Mangiero (Lori) of Maryland. He has three grandsons, Eddie and Michael Mangiero, and Russell Alverson, a granddaughter, Cristina Barndollar, and two great-granddaughters, Bella and Elli. He also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, and a host of other family and friends.

The family would like to offer special thanks to Dr. Ben Watson, Dr. Masood Ahmed, and Dr. Garrett White, who became friends as well as beloved physicians, to his caregiver Nicole, and to the wonderful, caring nurses at Candler Hospital ICU.

Visitation will be Tuesday, April 21, 2015 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary Service at 7:00 p.m. at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be co-celebrated by Monsignor Walter A. Birkle, Noreen’s brother, at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church. Burial will follow at the Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any remembrances be made to the Knights of Columbus, Islands Council, 10579,   7020 Concord Rd., Savannah, GA 31410, Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity, Inc., PO Box 13211, Savannah, GA 31416 or to Ronald McDonald House of The Coastal Empire, Inc., 4710 Waters Ave., Savannah, GA 31404 or to a charity of choice.

GUEST BOOK

My deepest condolences to my friend Carol and her family on the passing of her dear father. We met only once way back in the Staten Island days but I remember him as a kind man. May the Lord bless him an the entire Mangiero family.

I am so sorry for your loss. Ed was such a fine man, so honest and upright. When we moved to Savannah many years ago, he was one of the very first people we met. He never forgot a name or a face. I used to write a health care column for the newspaper and every week at church, he would give me his opinion of what I'd written. It made me try harder because I knew he read it. It meant a lot to me. My deepest condolences to the Mangiero family. He will be missed by so many. Betty Dixon

Eddie lived down the street from us and always waved when he drove by. He repaired many window screens for me and was always so pleasant to talk with. My kids remember him too. Eddie will be missed.

I was so very sorry to hear of Mr.Ed's passing. He was always one of my most favorite customers at the bank. Whenever he would come in, everyone knew he was there. He was such an inspiring man, always bringing a smile to everyone. I will cherish always my duck letter and pen holder, that sits on my desk, that he made for me when I retired. Please accept my sincere condolences.

I met Ed at the old YMCA facility on Penn Waller when I became the Branch Director. He always had a friendly, kind comment and a smile. He followed me and our Y staff to the current location on Whitemarsh Island. We didn't see him as often, though. I always enjoyed watching him interact with the young kids around the Y, sharing a compliment and advising to do good in school or listen to their parents. From what I know of Ed, he had a big persona and a beautiful soul. Not to mention I could always hear him coming before I could see him! Joel
