Celebrating the life of

Juanita Riner Halligan

September 11, 1924 - August 05, 2019

Juanita Riner Halligan

Juanita Riner Halligan, 94, went to her heavenly home from her earthly home August 5, 2019, after a long journey with Alzheimer’s. She was born September 11, 1924, in Soperton, Georgia, to Jonah L., Sr. and Sapola Brinson Riner. She grew up in Vidalia and moved to Savannah in 1945 with her husband, Joe Troy Halligan. Fondly called Mamma, Lady, Aunt Nita, and Nana, she was a homemaker and Christian servant. Known for “Nana’s Sweet Tea” and potato salad, her home and heart were always open to any in need of love and care, and her smile could brighten the darkest day.

She was a member of Morningside Baptist Church for 55 years where she had 37 years of perfect attendance in Sunday School, moving her membership to Christ’s Community Church in 2008 when the churches merged.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 61 years; her son Terry Lee Halligan; her brothers, Elmer Lee Riner, Sr., J.L. Riner, Jr., Curtis A. Riner, Sr., and Bobby Riner; and her sisters, Myrtle Evans, Sadie Hall, Johnnie Strock, and Mildred Campbell.

She is survived by her daughter Susan Halligan of Savannah, her son, Troy R. (Bobbie) Halligan of Duncan, SC, her brother Billy (Linda) Riner of Lyons, GA, her sister-in-law Betty Riner of Vidalia, GA, and her brother-in-law, Jim Halligan of Macon, GA. She is also survived by her “heart daughter” Kit (David) Harland of Cleveland, GA, and her God-sent family, Reverend Luong and Nam Nguyen and their sons and families: Son (Mung) Nguyen of Savannah, Nhan (Hong) Nguyen of Houston, TX, Ngon (Robin) Nguyen of Ashland City, TN, and Dien (Lan) Nguyen of Colorado Springs, CO. Left to cherish the memory of her generous spirit are numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and all who loved her. The effects of her illness were eased by the friendship and assistance of her long time neighbor, Hilda Johnson.

A celebration of life and homegoing service will be held on Thursday, August 8, 2019, at 1 PM at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel. Reverend Kenny Grant and Reverend Everett Tumblin will officiate. Visitation will be from noon until the hour of service. Burial at Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers are Thomas Strock, Carl Hall, Jonah Riner, Son Nguyen, Nhan Nguyen, and Dien Nguyen.

Susan, I came to love your mother through your wonderful narratives. She was a true southern charm and I will miss her myself. You were a God-sent caretaker for your mother and the love between you two shined through. I am having a procedure tomorrow and I will not get to attend her visitation or funeral to my sorrow. Please know you are in Jimmy and my thoughts and prayers. Trudie & Jim Sapp
