Celebrating the life of

George Michael Flanagan

May 24, 1917 - May 23, 2015

Charter member of Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church

George Michael Flanagan

“We cope with what we are presented in life with love and care and faith”

What an inspiration he was to all of us! George Michael Flanagan, of Savannah, Georgia passed away just 2 hours before his 98th birthday and so he is celebrating his birthday with his wife, Marjorie in heaven. He was born May 24, 1917 in Madisonville, Kentucky to the late James Michael Flanagan and Martha Mayer Flanagan. The family moved to Waycross, Georgia in 1922 where Mr. Flanagan attended local schools, including South Georgia College in Douglas, Georgia.

Mr. Flanagan joined the United States Marine Corps in July 1940. He participated in the Soloman Islands Conquest at Gudal Canal, Tulagu Island, and Florida Island. He returned to New Caledonia for reequipping artillery and radar equipment. His final action was in the Pacific with the invasion of Guam after which he returned to the states. He was stationed at Camp Lajune, North Carolina until the end of the war.

On December 28, 1947 he married Marjorie Jane Kennedy in St. John’s Episcopal Church in downtown Savannah.

George studied for and received his Foresters License in 1948. He settled in McIntosh County, Georgia and entered the timber business. After several years he returned to engineering and construction work at Fort Stewart. He participated in maintenance and complete construction work for a period of 10 years after which he moved to Savannah to continue his field engineering business with several organizations ending that career in Savannah with industrial and seaport clients.

George is a charter member of Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church. He joined Live Oak Masonic Lodge #137 in Darien, Georgia in 1951 and received his 50 year pin in 2001.

He was very active in civic work in Savannah for many years and was a Past President of the Kiwanis Club in Savannah. He was a member of the American Legion and the Statesboro Elks Lodge. He was an avid golfer and fisherman. After recovering from Colon Cancer he volunteered to counsel radiation and chemotherapy patients and help them accept their condition. He had a wonderful spirit of giving and sharing. He touched many lives in this community and elsewhere. He delivered bread every Tuesday to the Emmaus House, here in Savannah for many years.

George retired with his wife, Marjorie, at the Landings on Skidaway Island.

“Uncle George” shared his heart and his resources with many needy people in Savannah and nearby areas. He incorporated a group of four men called “The Joy Boys”. Their mission was to spread JOY throughout the community. This JOY will continue for years and years to come, thanks to his philanthropy.

He is preceded in death by his wife Marjorie Jane Kennedy Flanagan, sister Mary Elaine Marsh and brother James Michael Flanagan. He is survived by his nephew Bob Warnock (Dottie); niece, Jane McIntosh and several other nieces and nephews and close friends.

The family would like to especially thank the staff of the Oaks at the Marshes on Skidaway; also the caring love of Dr. Morris Geffen, Dr. Cristina Negrea and the Savannah Medical community involved in his life.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church. A reception will follow in Liston Hall. In lieu of flowers you may send a contribution in George’s memory to your favorite charity to carry on his JOY.

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith” 2 Timothy 4:7 (KJV)

GUEST BOOK

Uncle George, I'm deeply saddened that we never had the opportunity to meet. From what I've read it seems you were a wonderful man who was truly loved. I also see that you had a great love for mankind and life. You were someone many were proud to call their friend. I pray that in the new world to come I might have opportunity to greet you in the resurrection. Rev. 21:3-5 Maybe then, when old wounds have been healed and forgotten, we will be both family and friends. Your Great Niece, Mary Elaine Newcomer

George was a wonderful friend. he was always up-beat and positive about life itself. He enjoyed his life and his friends. I'll never forget that at any meeting that George took part in, he would always stand at the closing and lead everyone in the singing of "God Bless America". no person loved America more - A happiness that we will remember forever.

My condolences to the Flanagan family for the loss of your dear loved one. During this most difficult time, may your hearts be comforted by Jehovah God's promise to swallow up death forever and to wipe away the tears from all faces(Isaiah 25:8). Also during the days to come, may Mr. Flanagan's sweet memories fill your hearts with joy and peace.

Mr. Flanagan was a dear friend of our father and mother. We have such beautiful memories of his visits in our home. Listening to the conversation between our father and Mr. Flanagan, who both saw WWII action on Guam, and there was no doubt we were in the presence of two of the greatest generation's finest. Mr. Flanagan will be missed by many and the sun doesn't shine quite as brightly on this earth without him. Our condolences to his nieces and nephews. May his memory be eternal! With thanksgiving for a beautiful life lived to its fullest. With love, The Children of Jimmie & Tassie Kontos Irene Kontos Shadron Kathy Kontos Anastasia Kontos

We have been members of The Landings Club since it opened and have spent untold hours with George and Margie. It is hard to say good-bye,but we are comforted by the fact that George can once again be with and dine with his beloved wife.Tom had the pleasure and honor of handling certain legal matters for George over the years. We were both guests at their 4th of July parties at Landings Harbor where everyone waited on George to lead and sing "God Bless America".There was NO ONE more patriotic or proud of his country. The golf courses, his church family and his many devoted friends will be a little different now,but we must always remember this fine gentleman and pray for his soul going forward. To his loved ones we extend our deepest sympathy.
