Celebrating the life of
Lawrence Borden "Larry" Lee
February 28, 1944 - June 04, 2015
Savannah, GA - Lawrence Borden “Larry” Lee, 71, died suddenly at his home Thursday, June 4, 2015. Born in Huntsville, Alabama February 28, 1944, Larry grew up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and Charleston, South Carolina and attended the Gaud School for Boys. He graduated from the High School of Charleston and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received his Juris Doctor in 1971 from the University of South Carolina.
Larry spent most of his adult life in Georgia practicing civil and criminal law. He retired from the U.S. Attorney’s Office after thirty five years of service in the Federal Government. An aficionado of bluegrass music, Larry was one of the founders of WRFG Radio Free Georgia in Atlanta where he hosted and directed a bluegrass radio program for many years. Larry played the banjo and, as a bluegrass DJ, interviewed several legends of the genre including Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley.
While his son was growing up, he was a proud troop leader of the Cub Scouts in Atlanta and for years after coached youth soccer in both Atlanta and Savannah. He was the consummate handyman who taught his two daughters to always check their oil and that anything could be fixed with duct tape and a coat hanger.
Larry could frequently be found tooling about the Historic District in “Woody,” his lovingly restored Volkswagen Beetle. He enjoyed good and vigorous debate and was a frequent writer of letters to the editor of this paper. He had a penchant for peacoats and was an excellent amateur photographer. He particularly loved taking pictures of his grandchildren and the local wetlands and waterways he and his wife Kristin visited on sailing adventures.
Larry was a big fan of college baseball, basketball, and football and was known to remark that his Gamecocks were “just lucky to be on the same field as those guys.”
A member of St. Paul the Apostle Episcopal Church, Larry served as sub-Deacon, Senior Warden, a member of the Church Choir and the Men’s Club. He was the Financial Director of the Thomas Park Food Pantry, past-president of the Downtown Neighborhood Association, past chairman of the Board of the Savannah Homeless Authority and a member of the Rumpsteak Men’s Club and the Yeats Society. An avid sailing enthusiast, Larry was a member of the Geechee Sailing Club. Some of his happiest times were spent with family and friends aboard his boat, the Annabel Lee.
Larry is survived by his beloved wife, Kristin Tolvstad Lee; son, L. Borden Lee Jr. (Keith Frick) of Orange, VA; daughters Shannon E. R. Lee (Jonathan Goldstein) of Fredericksburg, VA and Ramsay H. Jarvis (Spencer) of Senoia, GA; brother, James R. Lee of Charleston, SC; and two precious grandchildren, J. Spencer Jarvis IV and Amelia Borden Frick Lee. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Borden Wallace Lee and father, E. Lawrence Lee.
A memorial visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., Sunday, June 7, 2015 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
The Requiem Mass will be 3:00 p.m., Monday, June 8, 2015 at St. Paul the Apostle Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. prior to the Mass.
Remembrances may be made to the Thomas Park Food Pantry, ? St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1802 Abercorn St., Savannah, GA 31401.
Kristin, so sorry to hear about Larry. He was such a witty and wonderful guy.
- John Meyer and Meryl Truett, Savannah, GA
Kris and Family, I am deeply sorry to hear of Larry's passing. My heartfelt sympathy is extended to all of you. Even though I didn't have a chance to interact with Larry, I can tell he was a real "keeper". Thinking of you. Helen
- Helen Bonnema Short, Sioux Falls, SD
I went to law school with Larry. We, along with one other of our classmates, Dan Perry, formed The Legal Research Organization under the tutelage of our criminal law professor and we proceeded to go on many adventures in the LRO Mobile, Dan's Ford. Larry had a keen wit and sense of humor. He could see the absurdity of any situation. The humor we shared is what stands out the most with me. To sum it all up, his humor and intelligence were exceptional and I was fortunate to have known and spent time with him.
- Woody Keels, Mt Pleasant, SC
I met Larry at the Geechee Sailing Club, yet I recognize him as a brother from a different mother. Our humor comes from the same dry storage. His humility was certainly inspired by the Holy Spirit. There are people whose nature was shaped by God's breath. Larry is one. The Geechees keep Kristen and family in our prayers.
- Dawson Long, Savannah, GA

Dear Kris and Family, I am so thankful to have had Larry as a good friend and boss. He always had time for the credit union and for me. Larry always used to say "We have 25% more fun at our annual meeting!" And we did because he brought the humor with him. He will be missed. We are all thinking of you and praying for you. God Bless You.

Dear Kristin: It is with a heavy heart that I send my most heartfelt condolences to you and all of your family and friends on the loss of Larry. Larry and I were colleagues at the Department of Justice for more than twenty years. But our relationship transcended work....he was my friend as well. His search for fairness in everything he did made how he lived his life special. His sense of humor in the face of adversity made him a very special friend indeed. I know that he cared deeply for you, his children and his brother,James. And I know that you will find the solace that you need with each other.
- Delora L. Kennebrew, Washington, DC

All you had to do was mention the name Larry Lee and that would bring a smile. What a character. He'd walk past my store with his jacket slung over his shoulder - eyes straight ahead - until I called him on it. That's when I learned what a great guy he was with his ever present smile and a sense of humor. Kris and family, I am so very sorry for your loss. He is going to be missed for a long long time by many.

We were deeply saddened to hear what has happened but at the same time -- felt such a warmth in our hearts to have been one among the many whose lives Larry touched in such a memorable way. I personally enjoyed and learned so much having worked under him at the U.S. Attorneys Office in Savannah. He was such a caring yet humorous supervisor. He will never be forgotten. Our prayers are with the family during this time as we remember how Larry loved and lived life and always took time to show others how much he cared. To God be the glory.
