It was the day after Thanksgiving. It was my first day at the Academy of the Sisters of Mercy and alone I boarded a school bus for the 30 minute ride to school. I had never been on a school bus and all of this (new school, new people, new house, new uniform), was scary. There were no helicopter parents in those days. When I climbed the steps onto the bus, there was Posey waiting for me. Maybe her parents made her do it, but I like to think she was just a friendly 6th grader who knew I needed a smile and somewhere to sit. I never forgot her even after all these years. i also think, she instilled in me a sense of how important it is to reach out to anyone beginning a new and maybe scary adventure.
