Celebrating the life of
Robert Anthony Espinoza
October 25, 1960 - June 25, 2015
Co-Owner of Fleet Feet Sports Savannah
SAVANNAH—Robert A. Espinoza, (54), died suddenly on June 25, 2015 at home. He was born on October 25, 1960 in San Diego, CA. A Marine’s son, he grew up living in several additional areas of the country including Texas, Virginia, and South Carolina. As a young man, he lived in Texas until finally finding his true home in Savannah, GA.
Always an athlete and runner, he was known as “the rabbit” in elementary school. He was state champion Beaufort High School wrestler, twice. Offered college-wrestling scholarships, he attended college for a short period of time, leaving early to start his career in the sports business. In Austin, TX, he found his passion for directing races and began to create a vision of owning a running store. He and his wife, Cookie, moved to Savannah, GA, in 2001 to make their vision a reality.
As co-owner of Fleet Feet Sports Savannah with his wife, Robert was a leader in creating a robust running community. His store is seen as a must “go-to” for runners of every level and ability. Robert’s joy was to create and offer training programs for all runners. Robert’s passion and desire to give back to the community motivated his drive to boost, create, and attract several races to Savannah. These included the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure; the Critz Tybee Run Fest; Tunnel to Towers Run; and many others. Through his tireless efforts, Robert was responsible for helping raise millions of dollars over the past 13 years for non-profits in Savannah and surrounding communities. He was a much loved and respected member of the Savannah community, winning recognition through several awards. His legacy will live on forever.
Surviving are his wife, Cookie Espinoza, of Savannah, GA; his son, Alex Espinoza (Diaquonne Lanier), of San Antonio, TX; his father, Carlos Espinoza, of Floresville, TX; his sister, Paula Espinoza (Augustine Hernandez), of Littleton, CO, and his dog of many years, Dagger. His mother, Olga Espinoza, preceded him in death.
A memorial celebration of his life will be held on Friday, July 3, 2015, 10 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Temple in Savannah, GA. To honor Robert, we invite attendees to dress in “Robert formal” attire, including running shoes and excluding ties.
The family suggests any remembrances be made in Robert’s memory to Susan G. Komen Coastal Georgia (www.komencoastalgeorgia.org ).
My heart is so heavy to learn of the loss of the ever smiling and positive Robert Espinoza. He and I spent quite a bit of time back in early 2001 after 9/11 traveling and preparing to open our stores (Savannah and Nashville.) His excitement and enthusiasm was infectious. His love of light of his life, Cookie...he would talk about her like they were teenagers. I wish I had not let 9yrs pass after I sold my store by not being in touch with Robert. I do want Cookie and Alex to know though, how much he loved them. Though, I am sure being such an outward projecting person as he was, he probably told them all the time. That is one thing I loved about Robert, you ALWAYS knew exactly how he felt about any situation. Robert, thank you for sharing some of the best days of your life with me. I will forever treasure the memories. And, friend, I will never forget the impact you made on my life. Love you always, Jill Mongene
- Jill Mongene , Brentwood, TN
Robert shared his vision with me in the early days when he was opening the store. Like so many other runners have said - it was super exciting to me that we would have a special store just all about running, I couldn't quite envision it coming to life - or that Savannah would support it. I was broken and ruined and just struggling to survive - but he didn't know that at the time. I lost my first husband 5/16/00 - his heart stopped in the night. I was already a runner. But Robert looked me in the eye and told me that I could run a marathon. I did that. He put the medal around my neck. Those conversations are the memories I treasure. His legacy in our community will be everlasting.

May his memory be a blessing, and may the source of peace bring peace to all who are mourning. I know I will always remember him and his generosity of spirit. He had a warm and kind presence. He was pleasantly and patiently open minded when it came to my "ideas" with events even though he had done hundreds before. What a special person who left his mark on a community in such a positive way. Thoughts and prayers for strength and coping to his wife and son, his closest friends and the FF staff.
- Mindy Nash, Savannah, GA

I overheard a friend say, “Robert Espinoza was the pied piper of running in Savannah”. I couldn’t have said it better myself. He created a vision, found opportunities and turned us all into believers. We were working on our eighth run together. We founded the Mighty Eighth’s Flying Fortress 5K and later brought the Tunnel to Towers 5K run to Savannah. As a former schoolmate of Stephen Siller’s (whom the Tunnel to Towers run honors), I was challenged to put the emotion aside and press on, but he managed to keep things logistically steady while adding detailed surprises at the event. One of my favorite memories of Robert was the night of our 2012 Tunnel to Towers race. He and Cookie joined our guests at the Elton John concert. He shared that Elton John was the very first concert he ever attended as a little boy with his older sister. We were front row, center and he knew every word to every song. I was really attending the Robert Espinoza concert - it was priceless. As a leader, he went to bat for me on a number of occasions and to this very day, the most meaningful compliment I’ve ever received was from him. I have a visualization of what running in Savannah would look like if Robert Espinoza never cast his shadow here. I picture no organized 5K runs – just all of us running into each other, wearing cotton shirts and Converse high-top sneakers. He had a vision and turned it into our experience. The reality is where we are at today – what he built. His legacy will shine on through many people, for many miles, for many years. And we’ll go forth wearing wick-free florescence, a little lycra and lacing up our Mizuno, Asics, or New Balance. Grinding now. Shining later. Shine on, Robert! “How wonderful life is while you're in the world.” – Elton John
- Jane G., Savannah, GA
I have such fond memories of working in the store with Robert and team in 2008. He encouraged grueling track runs in the mornings and then led our day supporting runners and walkers to stay comfortably on their feet and active. It was a fun and inspiring environment shared with a special group of people. I'll remember Robert for his contributions to the community, pure love of running, and love of Jackson Browne. He helped make Savannah a happier, healthier place. My condolences to the family.
- Allison Prather, Kathmandu, Nepal
What a great loss to the community, friends and family. I am a coach with C.R.E.W / representing Fleet Feet and all Roberts beliefs. What an exciting teacher, mentor, friend, athlete Robert was. Always open to new suggestions, always giving you that silly grin. Love that man forever! I know Robert and Richard Chambless are planning a great Angel Run up in heaven. The road is golden and Robert's music is sweet. Prayers to Cookie, Dagger and the entire family and friends. We will never forget you Robert..."Grind Now. Shine Later"
- Sherry Feathers, Savannah, ga
My daughter Kristen Angell Pate, worked for Robert for many years. He was a great friend and mentor for Kristen. Whenever I visited Savannah, he was very very kind to me and my family. Very very sad story/
- Rosemary Taylor, Yarmouthport, ma
I was so sorry to hear the news of Robert's passing. My heart goes out to his family, and to the whole running community who knew and loved Robert. I owned the two-story brick house directly across the street from Fleet Feet when the store first opened in 2002. I remember how excited I was that we were going to have a running store right in my neighborhood! It was such an improvement over what was there before, and I was so glad to meet Robert and Cookie. It's great to have neighbors who bring so much to the area, and Robert did just that. Little did I know quite the impact he would make!! Not just to the neighborhood, but to the whole community. His reach was far and wide, through all of the non-profits who benefitted from his generosity of donating his time for race management. It's truly such a loss, but I know his legacy will live on in the hearts (and swiftly running feet) of everyone he knew.
- Jill Jauch, Savannah, GA
My heart is broken for Cookie, Alex and Robert's immediate family, as well as his extended Savannah and low country family. Robert was so very special to me--a coach, an encourager, a mentor, a confidant in times of need or doubt, a great boss and a friend. My heart is so heavy and my brain can't process him being gone...celebrating his life with so many who loved him will certainly be one way to keep his memory alive
- Mareesa Torres , Savannah, GA
