Celebrating the life of

Beulah Harper Nettles

Passed away on July 03, 2015

Longtime Savannah Educator

Beulah Harper Nettles

Beulah Harper Nettles died peacefully on July 3rd, 2015 in Savannah, Georgia. Born in Unadilla, Georgia to A.C. and Beulah Brown, she was the youngest of their eight children.  Beulah graduated from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, Georgia at the age of 19. She took her first teaching position in Millen, Georgia where she met and married "her" Tom Harper. After their move to Savannah, Beulah taught school at Commercial High School until the birth of their son Tom.  She returned to her teaching career several years later at Savannah High School and then went on to Savannah Country Day School. In 1979, Beulah lost her beloved husband Tom and was always extremely grateful for the tremendous love and support given to her by her Country Day family. She felt very privileged to have the opportunity to a be part of the education of so many bright and promising young people throughout her teaching career. After 26 years at Country Day, she retired and found love again with James Harold Nettles, Sr., marrying in 1992.  They were happily married until his death in 2008.  She was a founding member of Memorial Baptist Church, where she taught adult Sunday school for many, many years.  Beulah was an active member of Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church and treasured her fellowship in Community Bible Study at Grace Methodist Church.

Above all, Beulah cherished her family and her roles as "Gram" and "Mama B".  Her children and grandchildren were her greatest source of pride. Beulah is survived by her son, Tom, and daughter-in-law Debbie Harper, their children Emily (Paul) Gray, Ellen (Allen) Williams, and Tom Harper, Jr., and her four great granddaughters.  She was blessed to have found a large and loving second family in the Nettles, Children: Diane (Jeff) Meseroll, Pamela (Dale) Karacostas, Deborah N. Hargroves, Susan (Ray) Smith, James Nettles, Jr. and their beautiful families. Visitation will be from 6-8 pm on Monday, July 6th, at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.

A service will be held at 10 am on Tuesday, July 7th, at Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church.

Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Paul Gray, Tom Harper, Jr., James Nettles, Jr., and Allen Williams.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Beulah B. Harper Scholarship (Savannah Country Day School) - 824 Stillwood Drive, 31419, or Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church - 1008 E. Henry Street, 31401.

GUEST BOOK

My deepest sympathy to the Harper and Nettles families for the loss of the legendary Beulah. Like countless SCDS and Savannah High School graduates, I have been profoundly influenced by her as a student and a teacher. As early as 1st grade, I gathered that the point of an SCDS education was to pass Mrs. Harper's English class. From her I learned that the "secret" to doing well on the SAT was to read voraciously and look up all the words I didn't know in the dictionary; that having good grammar certainly won't close any doors of opportunity; that "information literacy" is simply knowing who your "justified critics" are; and that calling B.S. like it is and being a lady are not incompatible. Her legacy continues in the stories I have been telling my students. My mother, Betsy Daniell, shared a friendship with her as a fellow "old school" English teacher, and that friendship flourished during her second marriage. I hope all the generations of Mrs. Harper's families will find some solace in the knowledge that hers was a life well lived.

- Emily Daniell Magruder, Los Angeles, CA

Beulah Harper taught me more about thinking, communicating, and writing clearly than any other teacher I have known. I was a transfer student to Savannah Country Day School in the 10th grade in the fall of 1973, so I did not have the benefit of her 9th grade grammar class. This coupled with the deteriorated state of public schools in the area prior to that year put me at a distinct disadvantage compared to my peers. For the entire first semester of 11th grade English, I hated Mrs. Harper; I have loved her ever since. She was demanding, often difficult, sometimes biting in her commentary, but she was always fair. She was a positive influence in countless ways, including a ripple effect to the next generation (I have passed on a love of literature and writing to my daughter, who has been regaled with numerous tales of that year). I know that I did little to impress her during the short year I was in her class, and I am sure that I was not particularly memorable to her as a student. Regardless, she was memorable to me, and she started a process in my intellectual life that continues to this day. I will ever be grateful for the lessons that I learned under her tutelage. She was a jewel of an educator, and a real inspiration to those fortunate enough to have been her students. She will be missed!

- Bob McGraw, Rome, GA

What a force of nature! "Mrs. Harper" positively influenced the lives of generations of students. I still tell the story of being motivated by the idea of doing well enough that I could get into a better school than her fictional "Ludowici Mental and Dental." Mrs. Harper still sits on my shoulder when I write, reuniting split infinitives and chopping off dangling participles. I wield my "track changes" in Word like she did her red pen, much to the chagrin of my colleagues. We should all be so lucky as to leave the legacy that she has, in Savannah and, through her students, around the world.

- Steven L. Higgs (SCDS Class of '76), Roanoke, Virginia

Though I will not be there to share the service tomorrow..know that your family is in my thoughts and prayers. I was honored to have spent so many happy days with Beulah in Savannah. What a wonderful lady! God bring you peace knowing Beulah is in a much better place. With love, Linda Miller

- Linda Miller, Venice, , Fl

I will miss Ms. Beulah - she always had a smile for everyone and her sharp wit was contagious. I wish she had been my teacher - I know I could have learned so many wonderful things, even English . . . God Bless Ms. Beulah . . . you will be so missed . . .

- Vicki Cronk, Savannah, GA

One of the most challenging teachers I've ever had. And truly one of the finest. Mrs. Harper held us to the highest standards and really pushed her students. Her legacy will live on and continue through the many of us whose lives she influenced and changed. Thank you Mrs. Harper! -Joseph Gamble, SCDS, Class of 92

- Joseph Gamble, Glenwood Springs , CO

My prayers go out to Mrs Beulah's family. She was a wonderful teacher. I graduated in 1963 at Savannah High School where she was my English teacher for two years. She was a member of my church at Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church. She was so much fun. I remember her at our dances we had at church. She took up the money and was ready to party with all of us. She had a lot of spirit and such a sweet lady. She will be truly missed. I know she is at peace now and with many in heaven that will greet her with open arms. God Bless her.

- Linda Combs, Savannah, Ga.

My condolences to the families. Mrs. Beulah Harper/Nettles was a fine teacher. I especially enjoyed her extra credit "book reviews" which were used mostly to catch up on how my family was doing. Also Russell Stover Candies will never have as great a fan.

- Alison Clark Sturm, Roswell, GA

Dear Tom (if I may), I knew your mother as the inimitable Mrs. Harper. I will always rememebr her as someone who was funny, formidable, caring, and who gave me a love of reading and writing that has stayed with me to this day. I wish you and your family much strength and clarity. Here is a little excerpt from a poem by Rilke that Mrs. Harper would have liked: "O hours of childhood,/ When behind each figure was more/ Than only the past and before us was not the future.../ And yet we were, in our aloneness,/ Pleased with what endures and we stood there/ in that in-between space between world and toy,/ in a place which, from the very start,/had been established for a pure event." Mrs. Bealah Harper was "a pure event."

- Anne Cheng, Princeton, NJ

Almost everyone in Savannah knew Beulah. Many were so fortunate as to have had her for their English teacher. We became friends with Beulah a few years ago and spent quite a bit of time out on the town with her at dinners and plays. Wherever Beulah went she had a following of folks who would run up to her for a hug and to talk of experiences they had shared. We will never forget Beulah, either, and will forever treasure the time we spent in her company.

- Colin and Jackie Stewart, Savannah,, GA

So many fine tributes for the great Mizzopper! I can but add another voice to the mighty chorus. She was first my teacher, then my savior from youthful excess, then practically a second mother, lively correspondent, and dear friend to the last. I'll keep the memory and the fine, sweet discipline she gave to me, and to so many others. Thank you for letting me enjoy a bit of your life for so long. So proud to have been one of your favorites! Sam Cargill SHS 1964

- Sam Cargill, Savannah, GA

I was very sorry to hear of Mrs. Harper's passing. I can truly say that she had the biggest impact on my education and I think of her lessons all the time. My sympathies to her family but hope they can take comfort in the fact that her legacy will live on through the lives she touched.

- Rafe Morrissey, Annapolis, MD

Two years ago, 25 years after graduating from SCDS (and 21 years since moving to Israel), I had the privilege of bumping into "Miss Harper" at a restaurant on Habersham St. When I sat down at my table, I thought that she might look familiar, but soon I heard that voice and prosody that could only be coming from Miss Harper. I got up from my table, introduced myself, and she miraculously remembered me and the fact that I live in Israel. I told her that I teach college level English and that I'm known to be very tough with my students. She gave me a big smile and said, "You got good training. Don't let up on them." I promised her that I wouldn't. My condolences to the Harper and Nettles families on your great loss.

- Daniel Portman, Modiin, Israel

Beulah and Tom and Harold were members of a special group of fun-loving friends named the "Geritol Gypsies". These were couples about the same age of Beulah and members of Memorial Baptist Church. We were 10 or 15 years younger than any of those people, but were graciously included. Beulah was among those who were role models for us who taught us, among other things, the value of having loving friends. Thank you, Beulah Dorothy and Charlie Hollis Wilmington, NC

- Charlie and Dorothy Hollis, Wilmington, NC

Beulah Harper was the best teacher I ever had. She was my homeroom and English teacher for three years at Savannah High School. She was tough, demanding, encouraging and supportive. She is with me daily reminding to speak clearly and correctly. She was also funny and witty. How grateful I am to have known her. I am 81 years old. I'll see you soon, Mrs. Harper.

- Mary Lynn Jenewein, Houston, Tx

My deepest sympathy to the Harper and Nettles families who have lost such a special member of their families. Beulah Harper Nettles taught me several English classes at SCDS in the 70s and gave me such a great foundation of knowledge that I later went on to be an English major and achieve a Masters degree in Communications. She was a strict teacher, but very kind to this incredibly shy teenager who had no confidence back then. Thank you, Mrs. Nettles, for your encouragement to me and to the hundreds of students that you taught in your educational career. Rest in Peace.

- Susan Robertson Kuzia, Augusta, GA

Tom, Your mom was such a wonderful lady and teacher, and such a great friend to my mom for so many years. We shared a common bond of having English teachers for monthers, and I remember the good time shared at the Harper's home. Of course I will always be eternally greatful that your mom introduced my mom (Martha Coleman) to Pop (Marion DeWitt), and brought such happiness into our lives. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

- Drew Coleman, Birmingham, AL

Deepest sympathy to the family of Beulah Harper Nettles. For many years I shared a portion of Livingston Hall with her - what special memories of those days at SCDS remain with me.

- Marianne Vawter Boyd, Louisville, KY

Please accept my condolences upon the death of Mrs. Nettles. Mr. Nettles was a patient of mine several years ago, and I got to know both of them very well. Mrs. Nettles was a wonderful, bright woman with enthusiasm and energy. She cared deeply about education and was so fond of the many young folks she touched through teaching. God bless you all with many fond memories. She will be missed by all who knew her.

- Kim Screen, Pooler, GA

Praying for the Harper and Nettles family. Savannah Country Day was blessed to have Beulah Harper Nettles as such an influential and dedicated educator.

- Itoi-Norris, Knoxville, TN

My deepest sympathy to the Nettles and Harper family for the loss of your dear Beulah. She was very important to three generations of the Bargeron family. She was a good friend of my mother, the late Saxon Bargeron, former local teacher, principal, and school superintendent. She taught me and my sister English at Savannah High. She taught both my sons at Country Day School. Even now, when I have to write or say something with complex grammmar,I think "how did Beulah teach me to say that?" Beulah was the single most important teacher in my life and that includes college, graduate school, medical school, and residency training. She was a very influential part of my family's life and will be sorely missed.

- Gene ("Bucky") Bargeron,M.D., Savannah, Ga

Mrs. Harper was always a sacred name at our house. She was one of two teachers that my husband Harry modeled his teaching after. I'm sure Harry will continue to correct my grammar for many years. I was so blessed to meet Mrs. Harper Nettles when I moved to Savannah. She was just delightful. I'm so thankful for a sweet visit I had with her a few weeks ago when she was at Savannah Square. We will miss her so much, but we are both very grateful for the impact she made on so many lives. May the Lord bless your family and comfort you during this time.

- Kaye and Harry McGee, Savannah, GA

I was privileged to have been taught English by Mrs. Harper at SCDS. She was the teacher who had the most impact on my education there. I'm sure this sentiment is echoed by hundreds or more of her students. She will be sorely missed and remembered fondly. May she rest in peace and may God bless and comfort you, her dear family.

- Ann Sharpley Armstrong, Guyton, Ga

Mrs. Beulah was a wonderful, beautiful, feisty, caring, Christian woman. I loved talking to her because she had a quick wit and loved to make a point. I will miss her. I am so glad to have known her. I am sure she is organizing and debating with the Angels. I will miss her! My Condolences to the family.

- Mary Pulwarty, Savannah, GA

God bless you in your time of grief. I think of Mrs. Harper every day, multiple times a day, every time I write a note on a patient's chart. Her "33's" taught me to write succinctly and accurately, under time pressure, and to communicate exactly what I want to say so that it's evident on the first read. But more than that, I will miss her indomitable spirit and her zest for life. Carpe Diem, Beulah.

You were such a blessing to mom .As soon as you moved to Savannah Square, your friendliness, kindness and vitality filled the hearts of those who passed by your opened door home!

- Mercedes Pares/Diana Watkins, Savannah, Ga

I suppose it’s only in retrospect that you recognize the importance of certain people in your life. I took Mrs. Harper’s class in 1989, and like many others, lived in fear of comma splices, split infinitives, and the dreaded Bull Machine. And yet, behind the high expectations and no-nonsense attitude (or maybe driving them) was a deep concern for her students, not just as high achievers but as human beings. Today, over 26 years later and as a professional educator myself, I can honestly say that being Mrs. Harper’s student proved to be a turning point in my life, and foundational in many aspects. She instilled uncompromisingly high standards with a profound love of learning – and what a wit! Who knows how many beautiful seeds she planted, or the riches she stored up in heaven doing so? May her memory be eternal.

- Tom Crea, Boston, MA

Please accept our condolences on the loss of your beloved Mother. Larry and Judy

Beulah meant a whole lot to me. She changed my life. Will miss her.

- Alex (Corky) Ormond, Savannah, Ga

I still shudder at split infinitives, sentence fragments, and the number 33. Mrs. Harper influenced not only my writing, but also the high expectations I set for myself.May her family take comfort in knowing how many lives Mrs. Harper touched.

- Michelle Elkins Botwinick, Atlanta, GA

Guerry was fortunate to have Mrs. Harper as his teacher. She always remembered him (although it has been many decades since his years at SCDS) and greeted me with equal enthusiasm although I was never her student. She was truly a great lady and we were blessed to have known her.

- Jeanne & Guerry Conrae, Savannah, GA

I was among those fortunate enough to have had Mrs. Harper as a teacher, mentor, and friend. Her love and support for our class lasted more than half a century beyond our graduation from Savannah High in 1961. She instilled in every one of her students a desire for excellence, not only in the use of the English language, but in all that we undertook. I, and so many others whose lives she influenced, will miss her.

- Charles Goldsmith, Sandy Springs, GA

Thank you Mrs. Harper. Thank you for not making things easy, for calling things as they were, and for believing we could all be a little bit better today than we were yesterday. You were unforgettable and your spirit and lessons live on through all those you touched.

- Larry Chang, Baltimore, MD

She was quite a teacher and a fine Christian lady. Even after college and 35 years in the business world, not many days pass without me thinking of her, what she taught, and how she taught it. She is with her Lord.

- Dickey Best, Savannah, GA

What a privilege it was to know Beulah, the most helpful, encouraging, supportive mentor I ever knew. Beulah edited >450 articles of mine for the Savannah News Press - correcting, deleting, until they were perfect - her style! I am so glad that we were privileged to have lunch with her last year. Her perky, delightful personality lasted until the end, I am sure. What a blessing she was to Savannah, and will continue to be through her many trainees, Ruth Garrett among them. Thanks for letting us know and for having the strength to carry her love and wisdom forward. Sincerely with love, Ruth Garrett

"Mrs. Harper " taught me English my senior year at Savannah Country Day. She was a wonderful educator and helped me develop a good vocabulary from " The Blue Book" . She was a good a good sport when I imitated her in our senior skit. I will have my thoughts and prayers with her and the family. Anthony Cook

- Anthony Cook, Savannah, GA

Tom, we are sorry for your loss. I know all your family will miss her. We never had the blessing of meeting her.

- Andy and Cheryl Starr, Savannah, GA

You almost made it to Independence Day...how appropriate for one of the most independent ladies I have ever met! "Each and every" student you taught will be forever influenced by you, our beloved English teacher and homeroom 231 teacher. Your strict, but loving instruction prepared us well for our careers to come. The many "Harperisms" we took with us have created a lasting memory and bond. Your teachings will keep you in my thoughts whenever "purple prose" and redundancies rear their heads. We will miss you dear lady, but know you have crossed from "Beulahland" to the streets of gold where you will keep busy with your red pen, quick wit, southern manners and joie de vivre. Those Angels will not even know what hit them! You will be missed. It's the end of an era.

- Micki Zaro Lee, Pelham, Al

Our prayers and thoughts are with you all, the Harpers and the Nettles families. My first introduction to Beulah was as my Sunday School teacher at the newly organized Memorial Baptist Church in 1960. She was the dearest of friends of my family, an inspiration and mentor to me through the years. Some of my fondest memories of Beulah include the skits that Katherine Tanner, Mary Davis and she performed for the "Geritol Gypsies". She will be tremendously missed. Our deepest sympathies to you all. Love, Katherine and Janice

- Katherine and Janice Burrell, Athens, GA

Every time I saw her she had the most beautiful smile and such a positive attitude. She encouraged me to do the same. My prayers are with all the family at this difficult time. God's blessings to all, Elena

I met Miss Beulah through Community Bible Study. When she found out I was a retired teacher, we bonded immediately. I treasure the many talks we had about our careers. My deepest sympathy to her family.

Dear Tom, Debbie and family, We were so sorry to hear of your Mom's death. She sure was a fighter and gave it her all right to the end...One tough lady! We pray your loving memories of your times together will sustain you through this tough time.

- Jack and Maureen Kouvel, Savannah, GA

I am so sorry for your loss. I will be unable to attend the services as I am recovering from back fusion surgery. I would not have made it through my teen years or memorable events in my life without the constant love of your mother. She was a great lady and will be missed by anyone who knew her.

- Kay Tanner Clausen, Sandersville, Ga

Everyone know knew Beulah at Country Day, marveled at her teaching techniques and all the students she influenced. When I was there as a teacher I enjoyed her humor and intellect. Peggy Harris

- Peggy and Stan Harris, SAvannah, Ga

In an effort to be "pithy" in my description of Mrs. Nettles, I think of the words "treasure" and "gift" for they describe who she was to me. My deepest sympathy to her dear family and loved ones. SCDS '79

- Stacy Wheeler Zimmerman, Boone, NC

I had the grand privilege of being in Mrs. Harper's English class for two years (10th and 11th grade.) I call her Mrs. Harper for that is how I shall always remember her, though she told me herself how happy she had been as the wife of Mr. Nettles as well as that of Mr. Harper. She was the very best teacher I ever had and is the reason I became an English teacher. I aspired to reach her greatness but, of course, never could have. But her strict discipline and instruction prepared me for college and career in a way that no other teacher did. In her daily classes, I learned to avoid purple prose, comma splices, the use of "each and every" (That's redundant, Janet!") and the dreaded one sentence paragraph. She was always a lady, always in control of her classes, and made the deconstruction of the English language and the appreciation of great literature easy and fun. There will never be another one like Beulah Harper.

- Janet Morris Belvin, Lovettsville, Virginia

My prayers are with your family at this time. She was the most outstanding teacher I ever had and was such a positive influence on all of her students.

- Celia Palefsky Dunn, Augusta, GA

Dear Harper's, Our Family is so very sorry to hear of Aunt Beulah's passing. I had just spoken to John on Thursday about her and had gotten Debbie's number from him to call this weekend and check on her. She was a super lady and the very dearest of friends to my Mom and Dad all those years and a great motivator and teacher for John and I. Her passing leaves a void in my heart that so many fond memories of you and your family should know will comfort us all. Blessings to you, Tommy, and all your family in this difficult time. Joe O Douglas, Jr and Family

- Family of Joe O. Douglas, Jr., Canton, GA

Mrs. Harper, was s special lady, she was one of the best teachers I had! She was fair, straight forward and on the students side! So glad I got to see her at our reunion. She was one of those teachers you never forget and you thank God for her. God Bless her.

- Carol Marie Bernhardt Seymour, Powder Springs, Ga.

She was a great teacher who influenced many of us at SHS. She taught us to value and aim for high standards. She taught us how to express ourselves well, a skill that enhances every part of life. She taught us never to say ``each and every''. I am grateful to have been her student.

- Tom Beale, Durham, NC

Sorry to hear about Mrs.Nettles. Great teacher.

- Shelby Robinson Roehrick, Midlothian, Va

Beulah was an inspiring teacher and a wonderful friend to both of us. We will miss her terribly. Diane and Byron Boyd

- Byron Boyd, Savannah, GA

As a teacher at SCDS Mrs. Harper terrified me, but the vocabulary and writing skills she scared into me have been a true blessing. As a fellow student at CBS Bible study Ms. Beulah honored me with kind words. For her dedication to improving the quality of life for so many through the years, I can just hear God saying, "Welcome home, and congratulations for a job well done my good and faithful servant."

- Brucie Yarborough , Savannah, Ga

Ms. Beulah, as she was affectionately known by both her fellow Savannah Community Bible Study members and the 50 children in our Children's Program, will be dearly missed. She was a picture of our Lord's grace, joy and love as she taught us by her example during the past 7 years. While some women may have thought they were beyond volunteering to work with our children, she continued to do so with great enthusiasm even in her 90's. And her frequent words of encouragement were a source of strength for all of our leadership. Knowing that she had hoped to leave the hospital Friday, brings us great Hope to realize that she did go home as she planned--to here eternal home. With Great Affection and Thanksgiving for the Blessing of Ms. Beulah's Life and Legacy, Debbie Nash and her CBS Family

- Deborah S. Nash, Savannah, Ga

It's hard for me to express the impact Ms. Harper had on my life. I shed many tears that Junior year--my first F (for a comma splice) which got me kicked out of Honors and sent to grammar class to boot! I didn't see it then, the magnitude of her caring about me and doing a tough thing because it was the right thing for me! What a phenomenal teacher she was. Tough but fair. And I still tell people about her BS spray and the Bull Machine. I can hear her whoop of a laugh in my memory even now, many years later. I am indebted to her for that year of English--I only wish I had taken the time to tell her how much I appreciate her. My writing skills have helped me many times in my life and she is a big part of that. Hope you are catching up with the literary greats, Ms Harper!

- Corrie Bryant-Habib, St. Thomas, VI

Like many others at SCDS, I count Mrs. Harper as the most influential of the many fine teachers I had in high school and at other levels. I hear her voice in my head every day as I go about my job, and I consider the things I learned from her to be some of the most important lessons of my 64 years. The Class of 1969 was honored to have Mrs. Harper join our 40th Reunion in 2009. She was an incredibly dedicated, firm, but kind teacher, and her influence on her students will continue to live on. My thoughts go out to her family.

- Keith Propst, Roswell, GA

Mrs. Harper was by far my favorite and most influential teacher throughout my education. The impact that she had on me, as well as many others, is still evident today. I am always correcting documents that have "hot water heater" or "each and every " in them. I will always cherish the picture of us that was taken at our SHS reunion last year. Heaven has gained another angel.

- Camille Puckett, Peachtree Corners, Georgia

God Bless You Mrs. Harper. Your influence on my life as a teacher and mentor is unsurpassed as an educator. What I learned under your tutelage has not, and will not, be forgotten. I hope your angels are well-versed with the Harbrace College Handbook.

- Kurt Oelschig, Savannah, GA

Although we never had the pleasure of Mrs. Nettles being an instructor at Memorial Day School, we did have the pleasure of her insight and spirit. Her teaching legacy set the standards for hundreds who followed and her former students are so fortunate to have had her as their teacher. The Nettles family have been very philanthropic to Memorial Day School and our school Chapel bears the name of "The Nettles Chapel" in honor of her late husband and founder of Memorial Baptist Church and Memorial Day School. RIP Mrs. Nettles.

- Mark & Maxine Sussman, Savannah, GA

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the family and friends. May her memory be eternal. With our deepest sympathy, Irene and Toby Purdy

- Irene and Toby Purdy, Richmond Hill, GA

Mrs. Harper was a wonderful teacher, mentor, and friend to me. I feel so blessed by her life and know she touched so many lives with her inspired teaching and amazing spirit. She will be missed by many. She will always be in my thoughts and prayers. Much sympathy to your family. Love, Lynn Tyson-Horton

- Lynn Tyson-Horton, Martinez, GA

My classmates and I bear the grand distinction of having been the first of Beulah Harpers state of the art English classes. Mrs Harper sett the standard for excellence which required no perfection and she did it with humor and charm

- Margie gordon, Savannah, Ga

Please receive my deepest and sincere sympathy at this sad time. Ms. Beulah "ruled" over her entire kingdom which spread to all corners of the earth with true grace and unmatched wit. Her constituents will be forever grateful to have been allowed to serve and learn from her and I am honored to be included in that fortunate group.

- Dr.PeggyByck, Sav, Ga

The Worley family sends their sympathy to your family on the loss of a great lady, the Queen of Room 7 Livingston Hall. It was a pleasure and a privilege to know her.

- The Worleys , Savannah, GA

I still invoke Mrs. Harper's name at least every year when I am talking about writing - she not only instilled a strong sense of how to do it right, but, as it turns out, and enthusiasm to keep doing it well past actual classroom assignments. She was a force of nature in that teeny body, and her force goes on in all of us her students. I'm sure she and my father Sandy Hand (also SCDS faculty)are now laughing together as they watch our antics from another plane of existence.

- Dorcas Hand, Houston, TX

I am so sorry to hear that Mrs. Harper has passed. She was an institution at SCDS. She will be missed.

- Seth Trotz, Acton, MA

Certainly a loss for a lot people. She was a positive and very large iinfluence on me.

- Hylos Barrett, Acworth, GA

The finest teacher, mentor, spiritual guide and close friend to ever graced my path. She was beloved by my departed Mother (Alsie Rabun) and by me since SHS in 1960-63. She brought many of us to and through college, graduate school and family life. Ever a guiding light with amazing powers of teaching and persuading. She is already sorely missed but never, never will be far from my thoughts and prayers. - - - Now, you also gotta' know, she's currently engaged in proofing and correcting all the Holy Scriptures. Blessings, John.

- John B. Rabun, Jr., Tybee Island, GA

Please accept our thoughts and prayers at this trying time. I am deeply saddened by the loss of my friend, confidant and mentor for our many years together at SCDS. If I ever was an effective teacher, disciplinarian, or administrator, all credit goes to Beulah's patience, guidance and love. Mal

- Mal and Kathryn White, Metter/Savannah, GA

My first night in Savannah in 1999 was spent in the home of Beulah Nettles. I was there in view of a call to be the pastor of Memorial Baptist Church. I became her pastor in May 1999. She was dedicated to her God, her family and her church. She loved the English language and reveled in teaching students how to use it. Rest in peace, Beulah. You have lived life well.

- Rev. Carolyn Hale Cubbedge, Pooler, GA

Beulah was a true life force. Always positive and energetic, even in her 80s. We'll miss her.

- the Prokops, savannah , ga

We shall always remember the woman who instilled knowledge and integrity in the minds of so many students. She was a legend and a great inspiration to our children.

- Drs. Doris and Martin Greenberg, Savannah, GA

.."Mizzoppah!"...so many of us at the SHS '50th reunion grinned at the recollection of our favorite nickname for you. Several still have the dictionary you "imprinted" upon us in your classroom. What a lady! Smart, sharp and making us believe we could meet your standards, well, more like insisting that we do...Thanks for giving us so much. Oh, and by the way, be gentle on the Good Lord when you go through His Book of Life with your red pencil...We will miss you.

- Bert Oelschig, Anniston, AL

RIP Mrs. Nettles.

Mal

Beulah was a true life force. Always positive and energetic, even in her 80s. We'll miss her.
