Celebrating the life of
Maria Kenney Buckhaults
July 15, 1952 - August 26, 2015
Maria Kenney Buckhaults (Shu-Shu), 63, passed away peacefully Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at Hospice Savannah after a year-long battle with ovarian cancer. She was born in Savannah, daughter of John Michael Kenney and Vivian Dupuy Kenney. Maria was a devout Catholic and parishioner of Saint Peter the Apostle Church for over 40 years. She recently became a communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
She was a 1970 graduate of Saint Vincent’s Academy and 1972 graduate of Memorial School of Practical Nursing. During her 40 year nursing career, she worked as a surgical nurse at Saint Joseph’s Hospital, an office nurse with Doctor Stephanie Croll, a school nurse at Saint Peter the Apostle School, and an office nurse with Doctor Gifford Lorenz. While at Saint Peter the Apostle School, she performed additional duties including after-school director for 12 years, classroom assistant and school registrar.
Proud of her Irish heritage, she was a member of the Savannah Irish Festival Committee, Daughters of Ireland (past board member), and Ladies’ Ancient Order of Hibernians (past president). Her proudest achievement, however, was founding Savannah’s first school of Irish dance, the “Irish Dancers of Savannah”. After 25 years of devoted service to her 2000 plus dance students, she became known and will be long remembered as Savannah’s “Mother of Irish Dance”.
Maria was a devoted daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She was preceded in death by her parents and son, Joe Wallace Buckhaults, Jr. Surviving are her daughters, Catherine Buckhaults Walker of Louisiana, and Camille Buckhaults Leonard (Stephen) of Savannah; sisters, Kathleen Kenney Brown of Savannah and Klair Kenney Snellbaker (Roy) of Fort Myers; custodial grandsons Ronald Mason Walker III and John Edward Walker of Savannah and grandson, Henry Francis Leonard of Savannah; nephew Jamie Mobley of Fort Myers; nieces Emily Brown and Allison Brown of Charlotte; and many cousins and friends.
Visitation will be from 5:00 – 7:00 PM, Friday, August 28, 2015 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel with a Rosary Service beginning at 6:00 PM.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 AM, Saturday, August 29, 2015 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be private at Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to custodial accounts held for Mason and John Walker at BB&T Bank to be used for their education, or to the charity of your choice.

We are so sorry to hear about the passing of Miss Maria. She introduced our daughter Claire to the beauty and fun of Irish dance when we lived in Savannah from 2003 - 2007. We have so many happy memories of participating in the lovely Irish events in Savannah - Tara Feis, Irish Fest and of course St. Patrick's Day.! Maria was a patient and joyful teacher who was so kind to our little kindergarten girl when she was starting out. Claire is still dancing today as a high school senior. Thank you Maria for that beautiful gift, and for making us feel welcome in Savannah. We pray that God will hold you and all who love you in the palm of his hand.
- Theresa Berman, Sioux Falls, SD
My thoughts and prayers go out to your family at the time. She was a very sweet, caring, and lovely lady and funny too!

Dear Kenney and Buckhaults Family and especially Maria's sister, Kathy, with whom I graduated from SV. Comforting words somehow escape me at this moment - maybe it's because losing a beloved sister is unimaginable for me. I just hope that the loving arms of your family and many friends will help you each to share the many good memories you all have of her. God Bless You Every One.
- Kitty Roney Martin, Opihikao, HI
I just heard that Savannah has lost an amazing woman and Heaven has gained one! Shu-Shu you will be greatly missed by many!! Fly high beautiful angel!!
- Jennifer Young, Savannah, Ga
I was one of "Ms. Maria's girls" for six years. I've got four younger siblings, three of which also danced with her. All five of us had her call Mom to come pick us up from St. Peter due to a fever or stomach bug at some point or another; and she taught my whole 8th grade class how to dance the Siege of Ennis for class night. Ms. Maria was a local celebrity of sorts, and an entire generation of little girls from Savannah--many of whom are now essentially grown up--will never forget her.
- Angela N., Millledgeville, GA
Miss Maria was my dance instructor for many years with Irish Dancers of Savannah. She was a patient and attentive instructor and I was always amazed at how she could be on her feet all those hours at practice sessions, parades and competitions. She never let any of her students fall by the wayside-she wanted everyone to thrive. The amount of patience it must have taken to teach hundreds of energetic little children and teens how to dance would be overwhelming for anyone else, but Maria had the patience and humor of an Irish saint. I am lucky to have had a love of Irish dance instilled in me and even now in my 30’s I still can’t help but dance along when I hear a jig or a reel. Maria will be greatly missed, and her family is in my prayers.
- Tara O'Shea Coggin, Jacksonville, FL
We send our deepest sympathy to the entire family.Maria fought long and hard and is now at peace. She will be missed and remembered. You will be in our thoughts and prayers.
- Judy and Tom Mahoney, Savannah, Georgia
I met Ms.Maria when I was enrolled at St.Peter's. She as so warm and nurturing and I always looked forward to her hugs. I thought she had the prettiest eyes in the whole world, and even named my barbie doll after her. I left private school in the fourth grade and didn't really see as much of her after that. When I turned 16, I needed a job. Someone I knew turned me to an ad in the church bulletin. I called the number, and later went in for an interview. I nervously walked in the room, only to see a familiar pair of friendly eyes. I feel honored to have been hired for my first job by Ms.Maria, but even more honored to have worked under her. The greatest blessing, however, was just to know her and have her as a positive influence in my life. My condolences to John, Mason, and the entire family. I know this is a significant loss for everyone.
- Jenna Scott , Pooler, Ga
My deepest sympathy to Maria's family. I only met Maria once when I attended the recital of my granddaughter, Eden Sadler. I immediately found her to be a warm and kind person, from the first hello and her genuine smile. My prayers are with the family. She is in Heaven.
- Audrey deSena, Dartmouth, MA
My thoughts and prayers are with the whole family as I know Maria will be missed but rest assured that heaven has gained a beautiful angel!

I am so sorry to hear of Maria's passing. We became friends many years ago when we both worked in surgery at Candler Central Hospital. Maria was the kind of friend you could not see for years, but when you did your relationship was just as sweet and dear as if you had spoken yesterday. I am a better person for having known her. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.
- Karen Traver, Savannah, Ga.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to Maria's family. We will keep them in our hearts and prayers.
- Scott and Debbie Marshall, Savannah, GA
I am so sorry. Maria was a beautiful, sweet, loving and caring person. I remember meeting her as a child when we took dance classes together. She was so good and in tap I remember watching her steps and trying to follow what she was doing so I could keep up. I remember talking with her, maybe a couple of years ago in the Candler parking lot. She was going in to work. We hugged. She had a big smile on her face! We talked for a few minutes and what I remember is her positive attitude and her sweet smile! Heaven has a new angel!
- Jennifer Curran, Savannah, Georgia

Camille, Stephen, Henry, Kitty, Klair, Kathy, Mason, John, My heartfelt love and support as each of you prepares for life without Maria. What a force of nature Ria was. Upbeat, positive, and passionate. She was never a spectator; she was a participant in this crazy thing called LIFE!! Our 30+ years as friends and fellow Irish women brought us together in a lot of different settings. My son's friendship with Joe gave us countless hours of mutual joy, worry, laughter, and fears. Oh how I loved my wacky friend Maria. I will miss her dearly. I will never celebrate the Irish "High Holy Season" in quite the same manner, again. Oh how we laughed and cried over the years. Know that I am there for each of you if you need me - Maria left huge footprints on my heart and touched my very soul. Rest in Peace and Perpetual Light, dear friend!
