Allene Wilkie George

Allene Wilkie George, 89, died Sunday, August 30, 2015 at Memorial University Medical Center.  She was born in Chicago, Illinois daughter of Col. Lorne and Frances Anderson Wilkie.  She grew up at Fort Screven, Tybee Island, Georgia where her father was stationed.  She attended Savannah High School and graduated from Decatur Girls High School in 1943 after her family moved to Atlanta.  After graduation, she attended St. Joseph’s School of Nursing.  She joined the United States Cadet Nurses Corps and graduated from Nursing School in 1945.  She was instrumental in starting the first Recovery Room at Emory University Hospital.  She married her childhood sweetheart, Frank Vreeland George, Jr., on January 12, 1956.

Allene was always community minded.  She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Savannah since 1969, life member of Girl Scouts of the USA, member of Girl Scout Troop 15, served as troop leader, cookie chair, camp registration nurse and president of the Girl Scout Council of Savannah and an active member of the Savannah Chapter of the DAR.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Col. Lorne Wilkie and Frances Anderson Wilkie, brothers, Robert Lorne Wilkie, Corporal Charles Edward Wilkie and sister, Lorraine Wilkie Mason.

Surviving are her husband, F. Vreeland George, Jr. of Savannah; children, Frances Arnsdorff (Glenn), Charles L. George (Holly), Lorne V. George (Sheila), Jennifer G. Hartenhoff (Larry); grandchildren, Karsen A. George, Frank V. George, III, Lilly S. George, Robert Jay Sutton, Jr. (Joy) and many cherished nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, September 3, 2015 at First Baptist Church of Savannah.  Interment will follow in Beaufort National Cemetery at 2:00 p.m.
