Reginald Davant Abbott, Sr.

Reginald Davant Abbott, Sr., passed away Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at home after a short illness.

Reggie was born September 15, 1929 in Marlow, Georgia and was a lifelong resident of Savannah. He retired from Kole Investments and was a well-known civic leader. He served as President of the Savannah Jaycees, Exalted Ruler and Trustee of Savannah Elks Lodge 183, Captain of the 118th. Field Artillery, Army National Guard, President of the Chatham Artillery, lifetime member of the Savannah Volunteer Guards, 32nd. Degree Scottish Rite Mason and active member of many other civic and charitable organizations. He was an avid golfer and supporter of the Bacon Park Golf Course and a charter member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. Most of all, he was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Gretta Crosby Abbott; son, Reginald D. Abbott, Jr., (Donna) and daughter, Deborah Abbott Rose (Brent) all of Savannah; daughter, Diane Abbott Rice (Jim) of Charleston, SC; grandchildren, Wendy Vinall Cohen (Jon), Lynn Vinall Shelley (Rick), Michael Blackburn (Lindsey), Mindy Blackburn Chtak (Sam), Reginald D. Abbott, III, Travis Abbott, David Abbott and Quincy Rice.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marjorie and Rufus Abbott, his brother, R.L. Abbott, and his sister, Dorothy Whitlock.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 12, 2015 in the Hodgson Chapel of Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. prior to the service. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Chatham Artillery and the members of the Monday/Wednesday/Friday noon blitz of Bacon Park Golf Course.
