Richard Nelson

Savannah, GA

Richard Nelson "Doc" Henry, 77 passed away January 1, 2020 at his home.

Nelson spent his youth growing up in Screven County, Georgia where he graduated from Screven County High School in 1960. Upon graduation, Nelson became an apprentice electrician with M.L. Smith Electric in Garden City, Georgia for a few years, and left to become a Journeyman Electrician and eventually a Master Electrician with Rabey Electric in Savannah, Georgia for 34 years. Upon retirement “Doc” spent his years caring for his family and friends in any way he could, whether that be giving someone a couple of dollars to get by, clothes to wear, food to eat, or a place to stay, he would do it without hesitation. He leaves behind a legacy one only dreams of achieving, and he will be dearly missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Nelson is preceded on death by his parents, Richard Mays Henry and Mary Rosier Hatcher; wife, Ella Faye Wainwright Henry; daughter, Kathy Lynn Henry; son, Richard Nelson Henry Jr.; step-daughter, Bonny Carroll; step-sons, Alex Hand, Albert Hand, and Max Hand.

Nelson is survived by his granddaughters, Brittney Nicole Mouton Viator and Brie' Lynn Harrelson; grandson, Tyler John Schmidt; sister, Joann Hatcher; brother, Jimmy Hatcher; aunt and uncle, Jack and Helen Sowell; as well as many cousins and friends throughout southeast Georgia.

Nelson wished to have his body cremated. A memorial celebration of life will be held at the Old Homeplace at a future date in 2020 when all family and friends can be present.

Nelson would want any and all contributions to go to local charities of choice that support our military service members and the homeless.

A candle has been lit!

Mr. Henry was a wonderful man. He would give a stranger the shirt off his back. He experienced a lot of loss in his life and it was heartbreaking. It puts me at ease to know he's finally at peace and resting.
