Charles (Charlie) Alexander Perry, Jr.

Charles (Charlie) Alexander Perry, Jr. – SAVANNAH – Charles passed away on December 4, 2015 at his home in Savannah. Charles was a loving father and husband, life-long Savannahian, small business owner, and real estate broker. Charles was born on E. 37th St. in 1927. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1944 at the age of 17 and was deployed to the South Pacific during World War II. He returned from war and attended the University of Georgia in Athens where he sang in the Glee Club and was a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity. Out of college he was employed as an accountant in Aiken, South Carolina at the Savannah River Site. He then moved back home to Savannah where he became a practicing real estate professional working for Mercer Realty. In 1958 he opened his own real estate business, C.A. Perry Realtor, Inc. Throughout his life he was an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. He served as President of the Sertoma Club in the late 1970's through mid-80's and was President of the Savannah Theater Company in the mid to late 1980's. His passions were real estate, being of service to others, and dancing at the local shag club or whenever and wherever he had a chance to move his feet. He enjoyed surfing and walking the beaches at Tybee Island and Hilton Head, fishing, and entertaining friends and family in his home.

He is preceded in death by his grandmother Rosa Martin Perry, his parents Charles Alexander Perry II and Daisy Mae Waters, his brother, Thomas Haynes Perry, Jr., and his wife of 41 years, Dianne Gnann Perry. He is survived by his daughter Simona Lee Perry and son-in-law Ernesto Brown Barquero; two nieces, Suzanne Adams (Rick) of Port Wentworth and Gaye Williams (Chris) of Richmond Hill, and one nephew, Thomas Haynes “Tom” Perry, Jr.

Visitation will be Monday, December 7 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel. A funeral service will be Tuesday, December 8 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. There will be a private burial in the Greenwich Section of Bonaventure Cemetery.

I was lucky enough to meet Mr. Perry in or around 2005 when he assisted me in purchasing a unit at the Graham. His energy was so incredible that I always felt there was nothing he couldn’t accomplish. He also had an incredibly happy disposition and was a marvelous conversationalist who could discuss anything and everything, but mostly loved sharing stories about his beloved Savannah. He was a people person who maintained a wonderfully positive attitude for the entire time I was lucky enough to know him. I remember what a cute couple he and Dianne made and I always enjoyed the time we were able to share together. From him, I learned a lot about the city of Savannah and through the years, he helped me with the purchase and sale of several properties. Mr. Perry loved his St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and shared his porch with friends. He gave John and I the grand tour of his home and the history of the various items in it. Well into his eighties, his energy still abounded and his major method of transport was his legs which happily took him around Savannah each day. The last time I saw him was this past summer, and while I could see he was slowing down in mind and body, he still exhibited that same sense of excitement at seeing and conversing with us and sharing stories and information with us. The world will never be quite as bright without him it. Immediately upon hearing about his passing, I thought to myself, “Blessed are the pure of heart for they shall see God”. I believe that surely Mr. Perry has seen and met his heavenly Father and is enjoying all the rewards of his earthly labor with Him in heaven, and with Dianne and all the others he loved who preceded him and are welcoming him home. He was such a special man and will be greatly missed. My heartfelt sympathies go out to Simona Perry, whom he loved so much and of whom he was so proud.
