Celebrating the life of

Jean Sweat Hoover

March 23, 1932 - January 02, 2016

Jean Sweat Hoover

Jean S. Hoover, devoted wife, mother and grandmother, died January 2nd at St. Joseph’s Hospital after a short illness.  She was 83. She was preceded in death by her parents David Braxton Sweat, Norwood R. Graham and Bernice Graham; her husband Edward A. (Ted) Hoover; and her eldest son, Ted, Jr.

Jean was born and grew up in Charleston, SC. There she met her husband Ted and they were married for 64 years.  She moved to Atlanta with Ted and their two young sons in 1959.  While occasionally substitute teaching, she spent her time and energy raising her two boys “the old fashioned way.” In 1973 the Hoovers moved to Savannah.  Jean continued to be a doting mother and wife supporting Ted’s career and whatever activities Teddy and David were involved with.

Jean suffered a horrible stroke when she was 50 years old. While many would have thrown in the towel, she instead worked tirelessly and learned how to talk and walk again.  Although she would never drive again, she refused to let that slow her down.  She often said she “never liked to drive anyway, but just so long as she could still write a check she was happy.”

Until her death Jean’s opinion was never a mystery. You knew both where she stood and where you stood with her, like it or not.  Jean fought through her stroke and the loss of her son Teddy with outstanding resilience.  She shared an unabashed love of her family and friends.  She wanted to be sure you knew how proud she was of her granddaughter Madison.  A voracious reader, she kept all of her family and friends in the latest best seller.

She is survived by her son David; a daughter-in-law, Michelle; her granddaughter, Madison and her two brothers David and Bob Sweat.

The family would like to acknowledge and give thanks to her loving caregivers Erica: who became part of the family, Patt, Angie, Jennifer, Audrey, and Judy.

The family will hold a private celebration of Jean’s life.

My heart is so heavy learning about Jean's passing and my deepest condolences to her family. I'll cherish those wonderful memories of fun times in Hawaii on Diamond Head, dinner parties at 10 East Taylor Street with Teddy, her trip to our home in Vermont, our weekends on Tybee, and just sitting on the sofa across from her and Ted as she held court and regaled us with her stories. Jean will always hold a special place in my heart. I know that she would tell me to celebrate her memory and to enjoy each day to the fullest. Great advice.
